are colleges usually impressed with people who don't take ap classes but then take the exams and score 4's and 5's?

it normally means they self-studied

agreed it means self-studied!!

Alot of people self-study exams, and I don't think colleges will mind. Alot of times people self-study becuase that particular class will not fit into their scheldue or something like that!!

thanks for ur response but i know they obviously self study or they take a regular version of the ap class or somthing but when a college looks at a student's application and they see a regular or no class but an exam score of 4 or 5 do they think "wow this person didn't take the rigorous ap class but still managed to do well on the exam....we're impressed" or something like that......

It's impressive if you can become a National AP Scholar by the end of your Junior year, which means scoring 4 or higher on 8 AP exams.

if u didn't take the class but scored 4 or 5 on the exam, it shows that u have knowledge of the subject, and can possibly impress colleges... like "wow this kid just took the exam and did well... this might be a very motivated and talented student..." or something to that effect.

yes i agree with pyang88 said. When college admissons people look at your transcript and see that you have done so well on your ap exams with out studying. They will be pleased, it shows that your motivated and serious about school..
