Taking the semester off?

My mom is pushing me to take this upcoming semester off from school because mental health wise I'm not doing great and she doesn't want to see me crash and burn. I get where she's coming from, especially looking at how last semester went. However, I really don't want to take the semester off. My school is my home, and my friends there are my family.

I also want to graduate on time which will be impossible if I take the semester off, and I'm also afraid that if I take the semester off I won't go back to school.

I told my mom that I would consider taking the semester off and that I would talk to my therapist to see what she thought...I did, and she agrees with my mom that I should take the semester off. Ugh.

Has anyone else been in a situation like this? How was taking a semester off for you?

^ If you don’t mind sharing with us what’s wrong mentally because from the sounds of it, it seems like you’re fine.

I would stay if I were you. Getting this year over with just means one step closer to the finish line. Don’t prolong going to the finish line.

Bipolar II, GAD and OCD. The worry is mostly the BP.

If both your mom and your therapist agree maybe you should take a step back and consider where they’re coming from. They might be looking at your well-being from a perspective that you’re not, and you might begin to realize the reasoning behind their opinion.

You could discuss the possibility of going part-time. If you have been having a hard time a full load might become more stressful than you thought, and there’s no shame in that. It might be good to take it easy for a semester and only take a couple of classes.

If your college and college town are your home, maybe you could even consider moving there and working for a semester. That way you can get to know the town better and you don’t feel like you’re just stuck at home.

If you do consider taking a semester off or going part-time make sure you know exactly how this will effect your financial aid and graduation. For example, if one of your classes is only offered in the spring and you take spring semester off, and you need this class as a requirement for other classes, that can really put you behind.

Maybe just because my motto is “power through”, but I wouldn’t. It seems like just the fact you’re hesitant says you might as well soldier on.

I too had to take a semester off (or rather i decided to take online courses to keep me busy) due to the fact that i had to have surgery yesterday. Originally, i was supposed to move back on campus today.

Look into taking online corses and see what is offered.
