Since I am choosing classes this week, I am stuck on which schedule to take. I can either double up on Science and not take the language or drop the history and take the FL. At my school, science classes are 2 periods. I want to double up my junior and senior year with science classes. what would be the better route. I feel that Spanish is useless as I already know 10+ languages, but if I want to be competitive, I should take 4 years of FL.
Define “I already know 10 languages”? If you mean fluent in ten, I would say go for the double up in science. 2 years really isn’t that bad… That’s just a very strange statement
Get your proficiency in languages certified through SAT subject tests, national institutes (Confucius, Goethe, Alliance Française…) or through any external means. It’s a very interesting competency to have and a rare one.
If you can prove your proficiency in several languages through an external examination, you should be able to take two years of Spanish only as they’d be seen as a complement to the language you know, vs. a core course.
Wait you already know 10+ languages fluently? How?
The languages I know are really weird.
They are:
English (Duh)
Arabic (Where can I be tested? There is no AP Arabic exam)
Tuareg (Nomadic Desert Language)
Kayble (Algerian Nomadic Language)
Tashelhit (Atlas Mountain Language)
Tamazight (Atlas Mountain Language)
Riffi (Atlas Mountain Language)
Shawi (Algerian Nomadic Language)
Zenaga (West African Language)
Matmata (Tunisian Berber)
Somewhat fluent in:
Spanish (Taken 2 years)
French (Conversational from Moroccan school system, but not good enough for an AP Test)
Wow interesting. That’s awesome lol.
@euclid314 But you forgot the most relevant question, why do you know those languages?
If you had French from the Moroccan school system, it should be enough for AP - AP foreign language tests at CEF B1.
See with embassies if they have tests to certify your language levels.
There has to be an external test in Arabic. See with DOD?
The reason why I know them is that before I came to America, my family were part of a nomadic group called the Tuaregs in the Sahara. Since we were nomadic, we had a diverse number of people in the tribe. Many of them naturally knew 7+. In Africa, most children know 4.74 languages, so about 5.
I feel that my French is only good conversationally as the Tuareg school system in Morocco does not focus on French. I will not mention that I am fluent in French in the application. For the DOD, they have a test called the DLPT. But only people in the DOD can take it. I feel the only language I can get tested in is Arabic, and I will just take a college entrance exam on that.
You could take SAT French subject, it tests at roughly the level of 2-3 years of study.
Here are some examples:

The test is in November.
Yes you should be able to get some kind of testing for Arabic.
You should definitely explain your story and the languages you speak, including French.
If you can get a subject test score and/or a score in Arabic, it’d also allow you to not take Spanish 3.
Having BOTH a French subject test and Arabic would be quite impressive (in addition to all the languages you learned).
