Hello, so I am currently dismissed from UC Davis for plagiarism and a low gpa (1.33). I was wondering if taking any
upper divisions during the summer will count after readmission (as long as I finish my required courses before readmission)?
Where will you take the classes?
You would probably be better served re-taking courses you performed poorly in. Replacing a couple Ds with Bs will have a profound impact on your GPA.
Ok, so hopefully you check this thread sometime in the future.
I was dismissed and readmitted from UCD. My issues were medical, I have a disorder for which I wasn’t on any medication for. It made it extremely difficult to do well academically. I got in after a couple of quarters away from school. During that time I went and got back on meds and started working with a doctor, got letters, appealed for an retroactive withdrawal, etc.
Now, they don’t just let everyone back in. Readmission applications are not competitive. They want for you to get your shit together and go back. Their reasoning is that you’re obviously on a slippery slope, and they want to stop you before too much damage is done. Something is obviously wrong. I’ve read your previous posts, and I think you have some issues that you need to work through, first. You might have anxiety or depression, something. But my point is, you can’t try and take shortcuts just because they make you feel comfortable. Everyone has to go to class consistently, do homework, and take exams. That’s just part of the experience. If you want a degree that says UCD on it, you have to get comfortable with this fact. If it’s mentally too difficult for you, then go see someone. That being said, here’s some more info on how the whole process goes. You might have already been readmitted, but the way you worded your post it’s confusing. I’m just going to proceed under the assumption that you haven’t.
Your question about classes: my answer is that it depends. It’s really straightforward. When you’re dismissed you can only take summer classes at UC Davis. If you take any course during the summer at UC Davis, it’s going to count towards your UC GPA and credits for your major/graduation. If you don’t take classes at UC Davis, any classes you get won’t count towards your UC GPA. I.E. If you got a B+ you would only get credit at UCD for the course, not the B+.The class can transfer and you can get credit for the class, but you have to take them to each department, give them some things related to the class, and they’ll decide if it’s close enough to the UCD equivalent course.
If you get readmitted and haven’t taken any other classes, more likely than not they’re going to require you to take some summer classes. How that will work is that you’ll basically sign another contract, promising to take X number of courses during the summer and get at least a grade of Y or higher. If you do this, then you’ll be readmitted for the fall. You may still be required to get grades above Y for that quarter as well, though. If you didn’t get the required grades during the summer, then you’re just not readmitted.
My advice to you:
- Go talk to a staff advisor. There really isn't any reason not to. They're very nice people and only want to help. It's easy to make the mistake of thinking that you can take care of it yourself. I thought that way, and it only hurt me. If I had seen them before I was dismissed I probably wouldn't have gotten dismissed in the first place.
- It sounds like you have some anxiety or something. Go talk to a doctor about it. You can't expect to get your degree here by taking upper division courses or independent study. It doesn't work like that. On top of that, you may think that you'll be willing and able to do it, but you won't.
- Retake some classes you did poorly in if they're available. It's the fastest way to boost your GPA. Things may seem hopeless now, but they're not if you're willing to put in the effort. I was at a 1.89 GPA when I got dismissed, and I managed to end the summer with a 2.4. Just one summer.
- Develop some good habits before you go back to school. Be sure to go back for the right reasons: because you really want it.
Thanks but no thanks Rick. I don’t have depression nor do I have anxiety. I used to have social anxiety a while ago, but it had nothing to do with me showing to class or not. I was always able to talk to people and communicate, just afraid of the outcome sometimes, but that is no longer the case. Never been depressed. Whatever I do is what I love, even if it is judged terrible, I don’t give a rat’s @$$. Now I know I am asking for too much here and I am not expecting it to work, but I want it to work and I want to give it a try. If I sense it is not going to workout, then I will take smaller steps before it is too late. And I don’t need to see a doctor or adviser, they have never helped me. Usually the stuff they say I already know and thought through beforehand. Let me tell you the best adviser out there. It’s the freakin’ internet my peer. And the reason why I don’t want to go to class is because it’s a waste of time. I learn better on my own. I want to do other things too and not just focus on school all the time. I have interests in creating mobile apps, investing in stocks, and moving out. I don’t want to be doing computer algorithm code all the time.
