Taking Year off of high school for mental health?

Hi there! I started off the school year as a junior in high school, but was unable to complete even the first quarter due to significant mental health issues. I became severely depressed (to the point where I couldn’t even get out of bed) and had multiple anxiety and depressive episodes. Since my mental state was so bad, my parents and I decided it would be best to take a gap year and restart as a junior next year. Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience, and how having that experience affected college admissions. Despite being told that this will have little to no affect on college, as many institutions are becoming more pro-mental health, I still would like to know that I am not alone and others have gone through the same thing.

Was it your guidance counselor who reassured you about college? You will need them to explain in some detail in their recommendation letter what happened and how you recovered.

Does it matter?
What you need to do is get your health in order. Get it in order, and then worry about college.
If nothing else, you can go to Community College for a couple of years, do well, and then transfer.
Colleges would want to know that you are in go shape to finish college.
So your GC could say that you had health issues, they are now resolved .

^Exactly. The GC doesn’t need to mention it was mental health issues.

Please concentrate on meds and therapy. It sounds like your parents are supportive, so you are very fortunate - from what I’ve learned, that is unusual! Good luck to you. I have kids with mental illnesses and they are now doing well.

Hi, I’d love for you to PM me, as I did have a very similar experience and would love to share mine with you. I respect you greatly for being so candid with your experience and asking for insight - something I wish I had done when I was in your spot. Hope to talk to you soon.

@sunshine2019, you and the OP can’t PM yet because you don’t have 15 posts. After you make two more substantive posts, you can PM the OP and he/she can respond. Note that after you get to 15 posts, you need to log out and then back in before you can send a PM. Thank you for helping the OP!

Thank you, @MaineLonghorn  Just did it. OP, I’ll be sending a PM soon.
