This has been my career goal forever, anyone know good classes to take for this career, and what the ideal colleges would be for these subjects?

Sports Management or maybe Sports Marketing. Sports Management is a very broad field and if you want to be an agent, some law classes would help you out alot. Going to a school to study "sports" management isn't necessary though. Everyone that I've talked to in the sports industry--my interest is the marketing side--has said that colleagues with a "sports management" degree are on a level playing field with those with "management" degrees (or marketing, administration, etc). Neither is really "above" the other. The sports aspect of it will come naturally. I'm not sure what schools are good for sports agent-type study, since I focused on marketing/management. I'm now at a school w/o a "sports" emphasis.

Some good schools with majors related to sports/entertainment that I looked at were Oregon, Ohio University (not OSU), Indiana, UMass-Amherst, Michigan, Ithaca College, there was one I remember having something like "Entertainment Management" or something along those lines but I don't remember the school.

Thank you, would it be something like Business Administration, or something. I am also intrested in law so that could help this career or if this career doesn't work out for me.

The University of Oregon has an excellent Sports Marketing program with well connected internships. The school has a nice atmosphere, good sports teams and is fairly affordable even with out of state tuition.

Only bad thing is the rain...

Many people get a law degree to be/work for agents.

Just to clear things up, i would like to become a talent agent, or a sports agent, not just one thing.

and also would a law degree be better than a business degree?

Many agents have law degrees or have lawyers working in their offices so if you really want to be a sports or talent agent, go to law school. It's all about negotiating the contract.

Ok,thanks.

What do you reccomend for a good pre-law college that could get me into the field?

I have very good grades so just shoot away best possible places

Law schools don't require any specific undergraduate major. So you should just choose a major in which you would want to earn a degree. Lots of good prep for law school would be an undergrad focussing on a liberal arts foundation with lots of reading & writing.
but you can certainly be a business major and attend law school...for your interests that's probably the best route. Just work hard on your critical thinking and communication skills to be successful in law school.

thank you very much kind sir

try looking at amherst if u are giopng to go into law

i was looking around and saw "the business of entertainment" at USC, and it is exactly what i was looking for. any where else got something like this?

Lots of weird advice here. I'd like to straighten out a few things:

"Just to clear things up, i would like to become a talent agent, or a sports agent, not just one thing."

Ok, that makes things clear.

"if u are giopng to go into law"

I think you mean, "If you are going into Sports Law to defend groping."

"So you should just choose a major in which you would want to earn a degree."

Why didn't I think of that?

"Ohio University (not OSU)"

They recently changed the official name of Ohio University to "Ohio University not OSU" (OUNOSU)

"The sports aspect of it will come naturally."

That's what they used to tell Brian Bosworth.

"Sports Management is a very broad field"

Au contraire...it's actually dominated by men.

Since I said 3 of those things, let me clarify:

1.) I said "Ohio University (not OSU)" because when I would tell people I was looking at attending/transferring to Ohio they always assumed OSU. OhioU isn't as well known so people assume someone's talking about OSU. Like when someone says "I'm from New York" alot of people assume NYC.

2.) The Brian Bosworth comment is irrelevant. That's all I have to say about that.

3.) Sports Management dominated by men? What professions besides nursing and teaching aren't? I'm a girl and plan on working in the sports industry. Should I change my plans just because it's "dominated by men"?

But none of the above does anything to help the OP. Regarding the USC program, if you wanted to work in the film industry, it sounds like a match. Won't do any good if you change your mind and want to work in sports. I just glanced at the program though--it was never on my radar when I was searching for schools so I honestly don't know much about it. But it sounds like something for those wanting to enter the film industry. I don't know of too many schools with a degree in entertainment business and USC is around LA/Hollywood so that could be why they offer it. But alot of schools have sports and law oriented programs if you choose to go that route.

I would go to USC

either way. i was really influenced by the show "entourage", and "arliss" and it really seems like something i would be good at and interested in.

If that was true, then why would Internships require you to have a Sport Management degree, and not accept people with business degrees?

Some internships are that way, just like some programs are sports oriented. The internships I plan on applying for next summer (2008) are ESPN, US Olympics, Nike, Adidas, and Disney Wide World of Sports. None specifically ask for a Sport Management or Sport Marketing degree or program. Just marketing or management mainly.

On another note, I was wondering what school you went to. I remember reading your posts last year when you were looking for a sports management school. Good luck at Indiana! :)

UCS or UCLA

get an intern job at a talent agency (actors) while you're in school. if you're going the sports agent direction get to know everyone, I mean everyone, at the UCLA or USC athletic programs (admin, coaches, trainers, players), be a huge sports fan, know the top players at your school they are your future clients and or referrals, after undergrad get a law degree.

you want to be a serious and cool sports fan not a bafoon. your reputation will follow you and later in life athletes who are negotiating multi million dollar deals will remember your behavior in college.

^thanks

i am already like that with all the sports, and with movies i can really tell when someone is going to get famous and big.
