On a spin off from another post, those identified by the Duke or JHU etc…programs, what college did you end up at and was it your first choice?
No Duke TIPpers?
Hopefully Penn-Wharton. A few of my friends ranged from Harvard/Ivies/MIT/CalTech/Stanford to UT Austin
@qpqpqp…all TIPpers? That’s a nice list.
My kid was a NUMATS top 3 SAT CR scorer in 8th grade. She is at Harvey Mudd. Also accepted to U of Chicago, Swartmore, & Carleton.
@intparent…that’s interesting. What is her major? Isn’t HM engineering dominant while Swarthmore etal more humanities?
I don’t know where I’m going yet, but my closest friends from TIP are going to Stanford, Harvard, Rice, and UNC respectively. All were their first choices.
She was thinking Physics when she applied. Was accepted everyplace she applied, those were just her top schools (several other places with merit aid as well). HM is all STEM subjects, and she is still not decided between Physics and CS (which she discovered when she got there). She is a sophomore, so will have to decide soon!
And Swarthmore does offer an engineering major, by the way (although she has never wanted to be an engineer, and is even more sure now that she has take the required engineering course in the Mudd core sequence!).
Only a small sample but I would say the TIP students have fared better than the gifted.
Any more Duke TIP or JHU?
My S is Duke TIP. He will be attending Texas A&M (University Honors Program), which is his first choice.
I was duke TIP, national recognition. Into vandy, waiting on ivies and duke, rice…
Out of curiosity, what did you major in as well?
Son was Duke TIP, Grand Recognition, Currently in at University of Kentucky Honors, and Centre college, waitlisted at Vandy and waiting on Ivies, Georgetown & Washington and Lee.
All great schools.
My ds was identified through JHU. Hate to blow your premise.
He is attending Bama on full scholarship majoring in physics. He was accepted at several top schools, but full scholarship and Bama’s CBH program pulled him in. He loves it there.
I was a CTYer. A few CTYers I know have ended up at Yale, Harvard, and Fordham. I am a current senior. I’ve gotten accepted at UChicago, rejected at Northwestern, waiting on Ivies. I didn’t mention CTY on my college app
Just curious, have a bright little bro, which program is better
@SaphireNY I have never gone to TIP and I don’t know anyone who has, so I can’t compare CTY to TIP. However, I absolutely loved my 2 summers at CTY. It was the most brilliant, wonderful, and supportive community I have ever experienced thus far. CTY also does online courses as well in addition to their summer residential programs. If you would like me to comment on a specific part of CTY, such as the classes, activities, residential life, etc, I would be more than happy to do so.
Ty Pmmy. Sounds great. I do not mean this question to sound obnoxious at all it’s just that we go to a very regular small school, most kids are bright, some grades are brighter than others. My grade was not although there are some bright kids. I sort of feel like I became dumber over the years to fit in. I was never challenged much and I am not competitive in that I do not care about getting 100 95 without studying was fine. Whenever I asked a question I would get a response oh you will get the answer to that when you take IB whatever in 2 years. I wonder if I would have liked GT
So here is the question do you think being in GT made you smarter really stimulated you or would you have been more or less the same
My little bro is in elementary school, neither of us are geniuses, just feel a little disconnected from our friends
