Talent Scholarship Awards

I thought it might be good for next year's crop to have an idea of which BFA programs award talent scholarships (NOT need-based financial aid). The dollar amount isn't the intended topic of this thread, only which schools award them.

I'll start it off, in alphabetical order, and everyone feel free to add whatever information they have (cutting and pasting the list might be a good thing):

Adelphi: yes
Hartt: yes
Juilliard: no
SCAD: yes

muhlenberg has talent money, but it’s not a BFA

That’s okay, let’s include all theatre programs whether BA or BFA

Adelphi: Yes
Hartt: Yes
Juilliard: No
Muhlenberg (BA): Yes
SCAD: Yes

Is that really true for Juilliard? My daughter goes to Juilliard for music and received a talent award. Is drama treated differently? Just curious.

You’re just talking talent merit aid? How about unsolicited academic merit aid w/o FAFSA? Would that be useful?

In my research for 2 kids, almost every program has some sort of talent awards that they can award - however not all students receive them. In fact, some schools only have one or two awards. Some spread the money around. But, I can’t think of any schools that have NO talent money to award.

Adelphi: Yes
Hartt: Yes
Juilliard: No
Minnesota/Guthrie: Yes (not exactly merit, a blanket process that includes financial need is used to give awards from the BFA program. But awards are given based on merit alone)
Muhlenberg (BA): Yes
SCAD: Yes
Temple (BA): Yes

Adelphi: Yes
Coastal Carolina: Yes

So no one answered my question about Juilliard, but it remains on the list as the only “no”. I know a number undergrad musicians who have received merit aid from Juilliard-- but are you saying there is a policy against talent awards in drama?

Yes, glassharmonica. At the Juilliard drama audition, they specifically said no merit/talent awards for acting students. Only need-based financial aid.

EmmyBet, I’d like this thread to address only talent and not academic merit awards, just to keep it straightforward.

Megpmom, since Juilliard doesn’t do talent awards, I assume other conservatories that fancy themselves close to being in that league do the same. If you have info re: other schools that give talent awards, it would be great if you would provide the results of your research here. Thanks!

Adelphi: Yes

Temple (BA): Yes

Northwestern University (BA): no talent $ FOR FRESHMEN

For freshmen, NU offers no talent scholarships. On the other hand, they are extremely well endowed, and say they meet 100% of every accepted students’ demonstrated financial need (from CSS Profile and FAFSA).

Someone in admissions told me they have additional talent endowment money that may become available after freshman year. If anyone knows more about that, I’d love to hear more!

Don’t ask me how this happened, but DS had scholarship credit show up on the first financial statement we received. I read about this over on the MT forum a while ago at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/nyu-tisch-mt/605726-tisch-mt-scholarships.html?highlight=tisch+mt+scholarship</a>. This in NOT just for MT, as DS is in an acting studio. As NotMamaRose said:

And, no - - - this was not NEED based.

Somehow, DCJ007’s input (Evansville and SMU) dropped off the list. Both offer talent money, and in the case of SMU, can be used in conjunction with merit scholarships from the regular admissions office.

I think what we mean to say is that Juilliard ONLY awards scholarship money to talented people who have demonstrated financial need. In other words, if a multimillionaire with talent up the wazoo auditioned and was admitted, Juilliard would not award that person a talent scholarship because that person – despite being super duper talented – does not demonstrate financial need. Some schools use talent money to try to entice very desirable students to that particular school. Others, like Juilliard, tie talent money to financial need.
