Talk about an overly involved parent.

So after nearly an entire month of researching, getting recommendations from teachers, sending SAT scores, baking for the wonderful office ladies who are sending out my transcripts for me, and filling out apps, my Dad (who I live with) asks me (a few minutes ago) if I know what I am going to major in and if I have applied anywhere...

Not his fault, I tell myself. He didnt go through this process. His only experience with anything college related is my brother going off to school last year (and my brother is about as self sufficient as a navy seal and requires no assistance/moral support).

Note: My Father has done remarkably well without a higher education, yet still (financially) encourages his kids to get there degrees (yea, hes basically a rock star)

Thought I would share.

That's how it should be!!! Your dad is doing something right to have raised two kids who handle this stuff all on their own!

You have done remarkably well yourself. Keep up the good work.

Wow--you're basically a rock star too!

Can you count on him to pay for app fees, tuitions, and so on in the future?

If so, you're all set; if you're concerned, talk with him more seriously and make sure your list matches what he'll be willing and able to support, if -- no scratch that -- WHEN you get accepted at various places ! If you need to file financial aid forms, clue him in that you'll be needing his assistance soon; does he have his old tax forms filed so he can access that information. He'll probably need to start on that after Christmas, is my recollection. Maybe he wants to make some end-of-calendar year decisions about his money, too. It's fine if he's not a detail man on your apps, but you will need him to help financially. If he registers shock at sticker prices, then go into the financial aid info on CC and through your GC, if he screams "unaffordable; why on earth did you apply there?"

Congrats on your organization, independence, and the attitude of gratitude that caused you to bake for school staff. Impressive.

Thanks! My Dad is quite amazing, lol but I believe from this point forward I will insist that he is more involed in this process. I am typically very spoilled by his involvement in anything I am committed to (he raised $10,000 for my cheer squad when we went to nationals, he contributes whatever is needed for my shelter work). When the magic college fairy hadnt miraculously inform him of my application progress I was taken off guard.

As long as I am working, and 50/75 percent of my income (whatever that may be) is being contributed, he will pay the rest.

Haha, but he was a little shocked when he saw the app fees and the SAT score delivery fees on my credit card...

We are having this conversation right now, so excuse me while be debate the details.
