Talk about Honors Experience Day here!

Honors experience day was really cool! I half fell in love with the school. I'm feeling confident about going to UCI at this point if I don't get into say UCLA or Cal. The weather today was really nice and the campus was so green and clean. I liked Mesa housing more than middle earth personally even though it is more out of the way. All in all, I felt a great vibe from UCI and I'm interested to see how those who also attended honors experience day today felt.

I also went today and really enjoyed my visit. I had never been to or seen UCI so I was shocked and amazed by how green it was. I found it to be a very nice campus and the CHP sounded like it had some really good perks to it like more chances to work with professors. I as well am now highly considering UCI but have not made any final decision yet.

Did you get the chance to check out both mesa and middle earth honors housing? If so, which did you like more?

Unfortunately the lines to see the dorms were too long and my parents didn’t want to wait in line cause we were hungry so I did not see the interior of the dorms. However, I did see the style of community of the middle earth dorms and thought it was pretty cool.

I also liked the style of middle earth dorms but the inside felt really cramped and closed off. I enjoyed the Mesa dorms much because they were significantly more open and felt more spacious.

Oh ok well thanks for the input. If I do decide to attend there I will have to go and take a better look at them before choosing.

i thought it was really well put together! CHP sounds like a pretty amazing deal, and i really liked Middle Earth housing. Now i’m just worried about the social life there…

yea i have the same concern zippo i have heard many things about but not sure what to believe lol

It was okay for me. I wasn’t that impressed with what they said. I mean, nothing was bad, everything was amazing, but for me, it lacked that umph. They didn’t really convince me. The presentations were wonderful, UCI definitely has some great professors and students. The dorms were great, I could imagine comfortably living in either Middle Earth or Mesa.

But besides that, I’m not sure if I would attend UCI over say USC (I’m visiting it later this coming weekend). It just didn’t “fit”, although I’m sure that if I had to, I could manage.

The folder was great touch btw. Definitely added to the positive impression of UCI.

Can anyone sum up what they said about the honors program? I wasn’t able to make it :(

The event was, all in all, pretty great. The part I didn’t like was when they squeezed everyone, parents and all, into The Shire. I felt claustrophobic.

By the way, did any of you go into the honors housing for Mesa Court? If so, what was it like?

Rush, I don’t believe they said much about the CHP that you couldn’t find out from the brochures. They explained more about the Core, and how some of the classes contributed to the General Education requirements of whatever school. They also had a few professors talk about their class. Overall I would just say that you missed visiting the campus and the dorms. In terms of information there wasn’t anything mind blowing or new. It was nice getting some comments from students, but thats it. Perhaps if you told us what you were specifically looking forward to learn I could better explain…

Diana, the Mesa halls were a lot more open and from what I saw, slightly bigger. Like others have said, the Shire was pretty cramped. I did like the environment in there though (the polls plastered over the walls). Mesa definitely had a cleaner and more spacious feel though.

I went there not expecting to like the school very much- UCI isn’t my first choice. But I was surprised by how much I did like it, because it’s a very nice campus, and all the students I spoke to outside of the tour were friendly and engaging, with pretty fascinating research interests. I enjoyed the general information session because of the topics two of the professors discussed, especially Elizabeth Loftus’s “false memory”. I was less impressed with the Humanities information session, which put me to sleep a little, but not everything can be fun and games.

I think UCI did a great job of using the CHP as a way to draw in strong students who might consider CHP at UCI over the regular program at, say, UCLA. The housing tour was nice since I’ve never been to see dorms at another school (Middle Earth seemed a bit cramped like other people have said, but it’s called Middle Earth- that’s cool enough on its own) and they put a large emphasis on opportunities to study abroad, which personally I found really appealing.

The three things that made the biggest impression were the students, the campus itself (very big, lots of trees, great open spaces), and the study-abroad program. Overall it was a good program and UCI is a very nice place. Before going, I wasn’t very interested in attending UCI at all, but I think the Honors day went a long way towards convincing me to consider it.
