Hello everyone!! I’ve decided to start a thread for any parents/students who would like to ask questions to current students! Whether you are an incoming Freshman or a future auditionee, all questions are welcome!! I’m going to try to get a few more students on here so that we can answer any and all questions you might have!

Thank you for posting. My daughter is from the South and is planning on auditioning for Montclair State. From their website, it appears that most of the scholarship money goes to instate students. Can you tell me how many out of state students are in the program and if they offer scholarships?

Princessjpmom, my daughter is in the program from out of state and she got a scholarship. It seems quite a few of her MT classmates are from out of state.

Calleine thank you for your reply. D will definitely apply at MSU.

My son will be visiting/touring Montclair State in a few weeks, and I really hope he likes it. If so-- he’ll definitely apply and audition.

I’m excited about Montclair, from what I’ve read so far about the program, school, and facilities (new dorms!). And the proximity to NYC is a definite plus. (A train station on campus…what could be more convenient??) My folks live on Long Island, so he could very easily go out to their house for some R&R and home cooking.

It’s definitely on the list.

My daughter just started the program but so far she loves it and is very happy! She is taking tap, jazz, and ballet at levels that are right for her (she came in a strong dancer, so that was important) as well as Acting, Music Theory, Aural Skills, Vocal Technique and some other classes I can’t remember, and loves the faculty. She and some MT classmates have already gone into the City to student-rush a Broadway show. The train doesn’t stop on the campus on weekends, but there is a bus just a few blocks away. And even though the bus/train ride into the City is easy, downtown Montclair itself is really nice, in a beautiful (very wealthy) area. The new dorms really are gorgeous, and the A/C has been welcome with the recent heat wave. They have all the advantages of a VERY well-equipped campus but only a 24 minute ride to the City. Extremely happy with this program so far!!

Applied to Montclair State - status says “Review Application” - do you know what that means? Does it mean they are reviewing it? Waiting to see if they will invite me to audition.

If I am not mistaken, isn’t MSU one of the schools that will only schedule the audition after the student has received an academic acceptance? I think they have rolling admissions, right? In which case, review application likely means it is awaiting review by admissions and you should hear within a few weeks. If it only has to have been submitted, then you may want to let the theatre department know that, and see when you can schedule. The dates get busy, so that’s great that you are on top of things.

Hi, MSU does not require an academic review prior to submitting a request for audition. My S submitted his application a couple of weeks ago and we hadn’t heard from the school yet so I contacted the Auditions Coordinator inquiring about scheduling an audition. She said you may still receive an “Audition Request” from the school admissions department, but to ignore it if you use the link below. We requested his audition yesterday online and received the confirmation e-mail and supporting application within an hour of submitting the request!

I thought you had to be invited to audition after they reviewed your application. I will use the link you provided and get the audition scheduled - thank you!

Thank you so much for this. My D submitted her application, transcripts, ACT and essay and hasn’t heard anything about setting a time up. As of right now, she only has one set Chicago Unified time slot with another school, so I am getting concerned about the time slots filling up. I will post if she receives an audition time.

I would suggest calling the department and speaking directly with the administrator. I recall them saying last year that admissions doesn’t always give them a timely heads up about packets being complete Once all of your materials are submitted, they may give you a date. It doesn’t hurt to ask and may prevent getting shut out of dates.

My D got her Chicago Unifieds audition time for Montclair! What a relief.

FYI guys info on both the dorms and rec enter. Both have views of the NYC skyline and are gorgeous…

My D just got her academic acceptance today and is auditioning at LA unifieds. She is from out of state and was given a sizeable scholarship. She applied for BFA acting. If for some reason she does not get in would she be offered the BA program?

Bisouu, congrats on the academic acceptance. I would call someone in the Acting department and ask them that question. My guess would be that if the BA is non audition and your D has been academically accepted, that would be in option if the scholarship offered is an academic one. But I would call to clarify. FYI according to my D, the BFA MT and the BFA Acting programs are very separate.

Thanks so much Calliene for your quick response…My D is very excited and of course nervous…

Application has been submitted for quite some time and no acceptance/rejection or anything yet. Auditioned in early November and when logged in to check application status it still says audition not received - it has been over 3 weeks. This is concerning - anyone else have this same scenario?

So are all of the acceptances separate for academic and talent? We are instate and MSU has had all of her documents since October. Her audition is schedule already. Her portal says the “waived - IFR” for miscellaneous notes. Not sure what to think.

My D has received her academic acceptance along with a generous scholarship. She auditions at Unifieds on Feb. We are out of state…
