Talk to me about EA Students Open House

Ds has not visited campus and would like to attend that weekend. I'm inclined to go at another time for two reasons: 1) I'm cynical about dog-and-pony shows, and 2) He'll likely be in post-season play for his varsity sport, and we might have to pair this trip with another, causing him to miss a lot of days.

Can y'all share your experiences visiting the school that weekend vs other more "normal" days? With ds1, we avoided any admitted student days and felt like we got to see the schools looking like what he'd truly experience on a regular day.

TIA

The GAAP weekends are certainly more structured. I’d like to think that they’re a bit more useful than just being boilerplate dog-and-pony shows, but I’m biased, and I can’t really compare since I’ve never attended any. I do think that you can get a perfectly fine feel for the place without attending one and wouldn’t lose out on much, aside from the Hoya '17 t-shirt.

Some people like having activities and things structured for them, while others are ok with - or even prefer - doing their own research and planning. I would look over the GAAP schedule and see if any of it sounds truly “can’t miss” to you. If not, then I would do whatever best fits your schedules.

My son is a freshman this year and was admitted EA last year. We attended the open house and found it great. Yes, it is a bit of a dog/pony show, as they are putting their best foot forward to convince these kids that Georgetown is the best place for them. My son was already excited about GT, as we had visited the year before after Christmas and felt that it was a good fit for him, but the weekend was a confirmation. The best thing about that weekend, is that you have the chance to hear from from the dean’s of the school you were accepted and attend a lecture from a professor. After the lecture, we were all impressed and my son was ready to sign on the dotted line! Bottom line, if it fits in your schedule, I would highly recommend it. FWIW, my son had a great first semester and loves everything about the school, even his dorm, which according to him is the worst dorm in America! :)

Thanks for the responses. I’m assuming that he could attend class on any day we visited?

My son was also accepted EA. We cannot attend the GAAP weekend in March because of a previous commitment, but plan to visit in February. I also heard you can come to the RD GAAP weekend in April.

Generally yes, you can visit classes. Far fewer offered on Fridays, though. Details here: [Observing Classes - Office of Undergraduate Admissions](http://uadmissions.georgetown.edu/visiting/campus/observing_classes/) They’ll post a list of pre-approved classes that the professors have made open to visitors for the semester.

As omzac said, you could also attend a later GAAP weekend.

Congratulations on your son’s acceptance!

As a student who has both attended GAAP as a prospective student and as a Hoya, I just wanted to encourage your son to go. It’s a great experience, and it’s nice to meet people and get a feel for the campus beforehand. Yes, there are show elements, but there are also student panels (no parents or administrators allowed!), where accepted students can truly ask any questions they want.

Also, there is an EA-accepted students’ weekend in March, but there are two accepted students’ weekends in April. (Maybe the 12th and 26th? Not sure.) So, if you have the opportunity/means to go, by all means do! There are parent activities, but if some reason you’re not able to make it, it’s perfectly alright. I went to my GAAP weekend by myself.
