This summer: I have a part time job and will be teaching people of all ages how to read (literacy tutor)

u sound like u'd be a great applicant at many schools, vanderbilt included :) good luck and come and visit if you get a chance. where are you from?

I live in northern West Virginia, sort of near Kentucky, so I am not too far away. I plan on visiting at some point.

Another thing... I don't know if i'm really reaching here, but according to my aunt, vandy was apparently looking to admit more jewish kids when my cousin applied there two years ago. Does it actually help to be jewish here?

The administration prodded Jewish alumni to get a new Jewish center going on campus a few years back, and the Wall Street Journal wrote an article about it, which is what your aunt was picking up on. Vanderbilt isn't going to favor a Jewish applicant. However, applicants from the suburbs in the Boston-Washington corridor, many of whom are Jewish, may find they get a fairer shake at Vanderbilt than at elite Northeastern schools where such people don't seem sufficiently "diverse". Being from West Virginia, none of this should really impact you.
