I wrote up a draft of my essay, where I briefly talk about some issues I had with my family in a short paragraph and then described how one of my passions helped me get through that and made me a better person. Is it frowned upon to talk about a family issue? Does it come off as whiny or just somebody who complains about their life?

Anybody know?

bump again

I think it really depends on the tone of your essay. Are you writing it from a “woe is me” perspective, or are you simply stating it as a matter of fact and then demonstrating how you’re able to rise above your family issues? I would advise you to let someone outside of your family read the essay before you submit it in order to get honest feedback.

I think it depends on what the personal “issue” is. Some things are just better not sharing.
