Hi, I am beginning my Common App and had some questions regarding what I wanted to write. I am very familiar with the UK process, but not the American one as much. I am now beginning my American ones. I understand the essay is more creative. Here is what I wanted to know. I chose prompt #1: Some students have a background or story that is so central to their identity that they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story. I wanted to take a different approach. Instead of saying my race (being black in America) directly made me, I would say a central theme to my identity is being more than what others define me as. Breaking down the stereotype. Not that I disregard my Caribbean heritage, but instead what those around me define me as. My background doesn't define me, but I defy it which is why I am very proper, educated etc etc

Does this sound like a solid idea for an essay? Is it cliché? Please be honest, I'm new to the whole Common App process and would greatly appreciate any help!

Thanks
