I've had an ongoing conversation with an admissions counselor from my top choice for about 9 months. We go on a first name basis and he's been extremely caring about my application. He has helped me through a lot of things and we have a pretty good relationship through only emailing each other. Does this improve my chances of admission? If my stats are on the border or barely under, can he help make the difference? Does he have any say? Let me know!

Meh, I think it’s good to have a good relationship with your admission counselor, but it’s not as golden as a hook (URM, legacy, etc.). I think you’ll be someone they recognize when they pull up your file, but it’s not going to make you an easy admit. Especially if the school doesn’t track demonstrated interest or whatever.
