"Hi! I'm also trying to find more info on Tampa, so I guess I'm trying to "bump" this post back up. I saw your other Help! post so I'm going to respond to that too. D is 11th grader on Long Island. Good grades and she'll probably make National Honor Society (we'll know after next marking period) but my educated guess is that she'll get 950-1100 on SAT's based on old test. We received brochure for U of Tampa a few years ago for d # 1. That definitely won the award for nicest brochure and the school looked great. I've been on the website and the info, feel of school seem fine. D also hates cold weather so the choice of SUNY Brockport vs Tampa will be a no brainer based on her criteria. She may apply and then we'll definitely visit the school to get a clearer assessment. Now I am going to agree with Wyogal from your other post. It's not the school you go to but how you go about taking advantage of all the opportunities it has to offer. Now I am a graduate of SUNY Oswego -not exactly a powerhouse of a school. But one of my fellow "Oswegonians" was able to get a week-end job at the television station in Syracuse while going to Oswego. He took full advantage of his situation. You probably see him most days on TV as I'm talking about Al Roker. So for all those who think they're only going to make it in the world because the degree is from HYP etc. think again. If you take advantage of the opportunities your college has to offer, including Interships etc. and you're determined to succeed you should do fine. Good luck to you. And if anyone can add more info on Tampa, it would be appreciated. Thanks"

Oswego is not a bad school at all. I graduated from there and went to USF in Tampa for Grad school, as well as Bowling Green in Ohio. I would say that Oswego's reputation as well as academic programs are quite on par! As far as Tampa, I love it here! UT doesn't have a very good reputation as a strong academic school though. It is a pretty campus.

Either on this thread, or another, there was a post about a student who went to Tampa. The student was not a strong hs student, but realized that he/she wanted more challenge than UTampa offered. He/she transferred out to American and is much happier.

I don't know much about University of Tampa. However, I do know that Tampa is a dirty city and in my opinion, not very appealing. I live right outside of Tampa (about 45 minutes) and I wouldn't recommend the area at all.

marny1,
My niece from Long Island started at Tampa a couple of years ago and was very unhappy. She is a nice, fairly social, B type student. I believe she said that there were a lot of kids who went home on the weekends, thus lending it a commuter school vibe. I also remember her complaining that there really wasn't much to do. She transferred out after freshman year.

Hi mom0f3- my d decided to go to SUNY Cortland- so Tampa isn't in the cards anymore. We found the "commuter atmosphere" to be a problem with alot of OOS U's-(though Tampa is private ) alot of the schools that we considered such as George Mason-Temple and a few others had the reputation of being "commuter" schools. I guess a good thing about putting our SUNY's in remote areas of NYS, is that it is too far from home for the kids to come home on week-ends. I can't think of too many Suny's that have the commuter reputation- (except maybe Stony Brook). Our generation must be too nice to our kids. When I went away to college, the last thing we wanted to do was come home on the week-ends.

That "Krispy Kreme down the street" is the very one that provided our doughnuts we sold for fundraisers for the Key Club in HS in Tampa 40 years ago this year! We paid 50 cents per dozen for the doughnuts and sold them for a dollar a dozen....

Tomslaw- you were probably in diapers when I was at Oswego. It was a long time ago. To add to post # 44/ momof 3. I think Tampa is getting many more OOS kids. When we visited, the mentioned that about 1/2 of the kids are from OOS and mostly from the NE. As I previously stated, they had an admitted students session out on Long Island. There were definately over 100 people in the audience- and more than half looked like students. They had 5 other presentations that week from the DC area to Boston and they did a similar tour in the Chicago area. I am not pushing Tampa because I do not really know enough about it- but I can state that for a private U geared to a "B student" it seems interesting. They are generous with merit aid, so tuition can be around $12,000- lots of internships- nice campus and I liked the city of Tampa. I realize alot of people come to these boards with their own biases. I think there are some people who will never like an urban area. The see just the negatives and can't focus on the vitality a city has to offer. The campus is a few blocks from the Performing Arts Center- other theatres- Ybor City and other interesting places. Oh I forgot the most important- Legend Field (?) Winter Home of the NY Yankees. Though from an earlier post WashU gave a very negative impression, I can't help but think one of her visits may have been during a spring break. It's hard to imagine travelling from St. Louis to Tampa for a short visit. I will admit- I did think that kids from up north would visit their friends in Tampa over the winter break. So it may be possible that Tampa (and probably every other Fla. or southern school) may feel more like "Girls Gone Wild" during the spring break period. We're done looking- and Tampa ain't going to be the school for my kid- but I wouldn't rule it out for others. I will add that it is * in one of the college guide books (Shep & ___ most interesting colleges) as a Hot and Trendy School and I believe it is listed in Harvard Schmarvard (at least someone here recently listed the schools in that book and Tampa was one of them. We just got a letter from Tampa- stating that they will keep my d's application on file for 2 years. So if Cortland doesn't work out, we may be checking out Tampa again. Good luck to the Class of 2011.

This post may be WAY old, but I must say: I went to UT just last semester. I've since transferred.

What can I say about UT that hasn't already been said, um, TONS of Northerners. And Midwesterners. There's a few Floridians scattered in there. It really truly honestly is Suntan U. 80% of the people were (if they were girls) size micro-zero in Dior and Gucci or (if they were guys) jock types who thought they could get anyone they wanted. There were some "normal" people but not many. And there were TONS of issues with race and homophobia on campus. It was just nuts. Academic wise, I was not impressed. If you're a business major: go for it. I think that's the only really truly good major there. Because of the people (since most of them are snotty and not very nice) and the school didn't have the major I wanted anyway, I transferred. Best.decision.ever.

I still absolutely adore Tampa. It's a great city, so much life and so much to do. But there are great cities all over in Florida. And much better schools that won't cost an arm and a leg and half your soul for tuition. (PS. the dorms are all REALLY bad, trust me)

If you have any more questions or anything, definately private message me and I'll try to answer as much as I can. Sorry this post is so late from when you originally posted and I hope I was at least semi-helpful to you :)

I would love to see some updated info on this thread that isn’t 8 years old. What’s happened to U Tampa in the interim? We loved it during visit Nov 2011 re: Sykes College of Business/ Honors Program
