TAMU - B.S Applied Math or B.S Statistics

My son is currently a high school junior. He plans to apply for fall 2024.He loves math and its applications. He will most likely do a masters after B.S. Currently he says he want to be a “quant” (financial modeling) after college education.

We were in at aggieland saturday today. He spoke to faculty/staff/students from both the math department as well as the stats department. He likes both the departments.

What would you recommend as a first choice major - Applied Math OR Statistics

A&M has a 5 year Master combined.

Other schools seem to put more emphasis on investments in applied math where it doesn’t look like A&M does. Are you sure the curriculum matches his needs?

What are the end goals? Did you talk to each department about the end goals? They might help you better decide.

I’d say Applied Math but I’m not sure looking at the A&M curriculum that it’s the right place…but that’s why I’d talk to them.

But I think it’s early enough you can set up appointments with both departments.

Good luck.
