TAMU Civil Engineering chances

Howdy, I’m a current high school senior who is trying to get in to the TAMU Civil Engineering department!

-Top 8% in my class

-Sat : 1060, 1070

-Act : 22

-9 AP/Pre AP courses taken, 5 dual credit courses taken

-Over 500 volunteering hours

-Student Body Reporter

-Varsity Baseball 3 years, and a letter

-2 years in Chior

-A few teacher selected awards

-UIL member for 1 year

-Written all 3 of the required essays

-Part time job

Any idea on my chances? Also, is there any way to submit SAT/ACT scores after you have officially applied? My scores are clearly poor and I hope I can submit a more respectable one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks y’all.

You will need to get your scores up to gain admittance in the engineering dept at A&M. It is a highly competitive major and you will need top notch scores to get in.

Being top 8% in your class, guarantees you auto acceptance into the university. Engineering applicants also undergo a review process for admission to general engineering. ALL freshman admits go into general engineering for their first year and if you complete the required courses with the required grades, you then apply to the major you desire in April of your freshman year. You will list up to five majors. Your application will be reviewed by your first choice and either admitted or denied and then it goes to your second choice and so on, until you are admitted to a major. There is more to it so here is a link to read up on it. Read the whole page and the links. http://admissions.tamu.edu/freshman/apply-engineering

What engineering is looking for in holistic review is your math and physics readiness. What maths and Physics will you have had by graduation?

Early Action is October 15, which means you will get your decision in Dec. For EA, all of your documents and scores must be in by Oct 15. For regular decision, you application must be in by Dec. 1 and supporting documents by Dec. 8.

Yes, you can submit SAT/ACT scores after you apply, as long as they are before the deadline.

Here is all the info about entry to major, with a lot of informative links on the right. https://engineering.tamu.edu/academics/advisors-procedures/entry-to-a-major

Applications opened on July 1 this year, a month earlier.

Anything listed as optional is really mandatory, if you want to be as competitive as possible.

I will have AP Physics, Pre AP Algebra 1, Pre AP Algebra 2, Pre AP Geometry, AP Pre Cal, and AP Calculus done by the end of senior year. I am applying before Oct 15, which means I probably won’t have time to submit another test score… Thanks so much for the help!

Wait… you just said I could submit scores after never mind about the “won’t have time” part, Thank you!

@CarterH

Do retake the ACT and or SAT. Those are really low for engineering. What are your sub scores?

If you are not admitted to engineering after holistic review, they will ask you to chose another major, so be thinking if that is something you may want to do.

Being an auto admit, I would apply as soon as possible, just to get your admissions to the university. That admissions date has a bearing on housing. Once admitted, you have 30 days to accept admissions and apply for housing, to have guaranteed, on campus housing. Having an early date/time stamp for housing selection gives you the best chance of getting where you want to be for freshman year.

The housing application fee is $50 and non refundable. The housing deposit is $300. Both are payable at the time of application submission. Should you elect not to attend A&M at a later time, you can decline the admissions you accepted and the deposit is refundable but the app fee is not, as long as you make the change by May 1.

Get the complete app in asap. This is your time stamp. The supporting documents are due by Dec. 8, but I would not wait until then, just in case there is a problem with scores not arriving, transcripts getting lost, etc. It has happened, and then you are out of luck. Check the status in the AIS (applicant info system) you will have once you are admitted. Make sure all the blanks are checked off and monitor their status. Do not hesitate to call if something remains incomplete too long.

When you send your AP scores to A&M, print off the receipt that you paid and which ones you sent. For my daughter, College Board neglected to send 2 of her scores, though they were paid for. It took them 3 weeks to send any of them after request and payment. But they were expedient with the missing ones. You just have to monitor everything and be your own advocate.

Make sure to check your email as well, for instructions for things to complete (set up tamu email, etc). A lot of high school kids are not use to a lot of email communication and this is the main way TAMU will communicate with you, professors, etc.
