TAMU Honors Students

I will be moving into McFadden in a few weeks, and while I've heard that TAMU is largely a conservative school, I was wondering how that applies to the honors students and/or the honors dorms. I myself have no real political affiliation, but have found that most of my best friends are liberals. Do you think it will be hard for me to find friends like that in CStat?

Friends are friends… i mean someones political views shouldn’t stop u from making friends… ppl get married and have different political views… so I don’t see why someone wouldn’t want to be your friend because of it.

right, but what im saying is that despite not having a political preference, the people that i become really good friends with always end up being liberal

I’m not sure why honors students political affiliation would necessarily be different than an average students unless you’re trying to imply something? I’m pretty neutral but tend to lean conservative. There will definitely be some liberals on campus, just not near as many as say UT. There will also be a large number of conservatives, I know my roommate “hates liberals” and one of my friends jokes about how much one of his roommates dislikes Obama.

There is a Liberal Student Organization if you find the need to join a Liberal group, I know I might need to.

TxAggie, i wasnt implying anything. The reason i’m asking is obviously because im staying in the honors dorms and taking honors classes, so honors students will be forming at least a large base of where i will be making friends, and as a student group they will have characteristics that distinguish them from the general population of the school. I guess maybe i shouldve phrased it “are honors students more or less liberal than the general population at A&M?” but its really the same question.

The only difference I can think of in the Honors Dorms is there are going to be more students from out of state in those dorms than average, since A&M gives scholarships/in-state tuition to many students in the honors dorms.

Because you will have more of a mix of where students are from, you will probably find more liberal students than the general population.

Most of the students are not going to care that much how you feel politically, but you will still find many more conservatives. Keep an open mind, and I think you might find out you like a lot of those students as well! If things get boring, you can have some spirited debates during the election season, anyway.

; Kidding here - If you are thinking that more honors students are liberal at A&M because they study more or are more intelligent, I think you may find that isn’t really how it works!

Best wishes to you!

Why does it matter?

Seems to me if you are friendly and worth being around, people will be your friend no matter what your political affiliation might be. If you go in thinking you will have fun, I imagine you will probably end up making friends.

Well in my experience at least no one really cares about political tendencies, the ‘conservative’ stereotype comes from their history, traditions, and military influence mostly. I know personally, as a conservative also moving into McFadden, that I dont give anything like that a thought when I’m choosing friends.

Also, as someone in McFadden, wassup dude?! lol

There were definitely a fair amount of liberal-minded people in the honors community from what I saw. I hesitate to say there were more liberals in the honors dorms than elsewhere, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that was the case.

Also, apologies for going off-topic, but to y’all moving into McFadden, you should look into getting involved with Bonfire. I lived in McFadden last year (will be in Clements this year), got involved with some of the Lechner folks, and had a blast. I met a ton of honors people of all ages in addition to people all across campus. You should definitely look into it if you’re interested in doing something awesome. PM me for more info.
