I'm going to be applying to tanglewood for their piano program... but I'm wondering how hard is it to be accepted? Do you have to be able to play a concerto... or...? thx inadvance

I'm assuming you are talking about the high school program. You would have to be an accomplished pianist to be accepted. It is a highly competitive program for HS students. According to the website for BUTI, you have to audition using a piece from the baroque, classical, romantic or contemporary period. It is my understanding that this does not include things like Broadway show tunes or pop music. It's not that kind of program. You can call their office at Boston University and the folks there will be VERY helpful. DS went there for two years...and annually hundreds of kids auditioned on his instrument alone for 8 spots. Good luck to you...DS loved those two summers! BTW, Eastern Music Festival in Greensboro NC also has a summer piano program. If you're applying for this year for either program it would be good to get that application in and audition scheduled ASAP.

Thanks for the info..
I've been to competitions and performed in kennedy center with several other students at my piano "academy" --- but that was middle school... I'm afraid I'm a bit rusty now... It's been a few years.

Anyways would anyone happen to know how many spots there are and how many people are competing for those spots? I don't live in the US so I might not be able to call Tanglewood.

Send the BUTI folks an email. They will respond to that as well. The years DS was at BUTI, there were 32 piano students in the piano program spread over 2 sessions. I believe there were 2 session that were four weeks each but I wouldn't wager money on that. Some stayed for the full time.
