Hi, I received a likley letter yesterday and today, I just received a letter from Cornell saying:

"We are writing to tell you that the college's selection committee, which includes faculty members and deans, was very impressed with your application and has nominated you as a Pauline and Irving Tanner Dean's Scholar..."

They say that they accept about 50 students a class to this program. Still, I wanted to know how many people they nominate and if being nominated is a big deal.

Thanks for the link, I learned a lot about the program. Still, I want to know how likley one is to be nominated... and then accepted.

Dancelake2...what are your stats?!?!

If you were nominated, you are into the school. It's not really a hard to deduce.

She means the question of whether she will be accepted to the Dean's Scholar program, which isn't definitive at this point.

Yea, if they tell like 1000 people that they have been nominated... it's another story. But if they only tell a few that I'd be really excited.

Obviously you're someone that they're interested in. I wouldn't hesitate to call at some point and try to talk to someone in admissions about the program and how many people they nominate or any other questions you have.

Has anyone else been nominated?

yeah i have dancelake

My son got that letter last year (he's a freshman at Cornell this year)...we called to inquire about it, and they told us they couldn't tell us anything until after the Ivy League's official decision date...when that date came, he got a letter offering him admission to Cornell and to the Irving Tanner Dean's program...he got a $600 scholarship (they say it's for books, but it shows up as a $300/semester credit on the bursar's bill the month tuition is due), and he has been to several program dinners, which he has enjoyed . We talked to the dean after he got the formal offer, and she apologized for being unable to tell us that the letter actually was sort of a "pre-offer"--said it was against the Ivy League early notification prohibition...I think it means you're in, both Cornell and the honors program...

It certainly had some impact on his decision to attend Cornell (he chose among Cornell, Northwestern, Georgetown & U VA), where he's doing very well and is very happy. As a parent, I can't rave enough about Cornell...it's a terrific place (even in the cold & snow!)...

Congratulations to you, and good luck!

i chose between Cornell and Northwestern as well

thank you overanxious mother, that was very informative

My son just received (yesterday) the same letter dancelake2 described. The letter did mention the $600 book award as well as the $2,500 research grant. How important is it to attend the Tanner Deans Scholar Open House on 4/6 & 4/7? If my son can't make it to the open house, does it decrease his chance of becoming a Tanner Dean Scholar? I thank you in advance for your help!

Awesome, what were your sons' stats, RODS1990 and overanxious mother? And if its a pre-offer... then they probably nominate a few ppl? Anything that can help me with books... or research... I'm really interested in. Thanx.

I got the same letter and received the official acceptance (to the school and the program) today. Anyone planning to attend the Open House?
