TAP Application problem

Hi everyone,

I was applying for financial aid at NYU when I noticed you have to fill out a TAP application for schools in NY. When I went to add NYU and a few other NY schools to the list on the TAP application it only allowed me to enter my first choice. Is there any way around this? The NYU financial aid page said that the TAP application should be filled out after the FAFSA but it seems like you only need to fill it in for the college you actually decide to go to…

Can anyone help me figure this out? Any advice would be appreciated!

When you apply for TAP, you only list one NYS school. Have out been accepted to Nyu? It is not a problem. Nyu will give you a Tap award even if it is not listed on you tap application right now. What ever school you ultimately decide to attend inNYS, you will change you tap to that school remember that the max TAP is $5100 for a 0 EFC.

Ohh I see so you only need to fill it out after you get in? @sybbie719

You don’t have to worry about it. You will have tap in your financial aid package if you are eligible. When you decide on a school you can update

@sybbie719

Doesn’t this student need to apply for TAP? When does that application get done? It sounds like the specific school doesn’t need to be given now…but is there a separate application…or is TAP eligibility based solely on the FAFSA EFC.

You apply for tap at the same time you are filing the FAFSA because they are linked. If you miss that window, then you wait 3 days and you apply directly through HESC. When you apply for TAP, they pull the first NY state school from your FAFSA. The max tap is $5100 for a 0 EFC whether you attend a 5 year CUNY, SUNY or private. TAP cannot exceed the cost of tuition and can only be used for tuition ( so if you have a 0 EFC, and attend SUNY or CUNY community college , your TAP will cover CC tuition which is less than $5100).

Through the FAFSA completion initiative we can pull our school information to see who has completed a FAFSA / TAP application. If a student hasn’t completed the process we let them know what is missing and it literally takes 2 minutes to apply for TAP

OP, did you fill out the separate TAP application after you submitted FAFSA? I think Sybbie is saying that as long as you have a NY school listed on FAFSA you should be fine, just make sure you update the school you will actually attend with HESC after you make your decision so TAP award can be sent to correct school.

@mommdc @sybbie719 @thumper1 I submitted the FAFSA several weeks ago and only yesterday heard of the TAP Application and created an account. I think I understand how it works now: as I have it right now, with a NYS school listed it’s alright, until I decide on a school, at which point I change it. Thank you all so so much for your help!!

You need to make sure to check your email that you used for FAFSA and also for the colleges you applied to. You might get messages about your FAFSA processing, about not submitting application for TAP (I think our state sends an email if you didn’t sign up for state aid with the link in FAFSA confirmation page).

So you might miss important communication about possibly time sensitive things.

I know young people these days don’t primarily communicate via email. But it is going to be important in college to get information about financial aid, tuition bills, from professors, also later when you enter the work force.

Last year my D’s college kept emailing her to set up parent as authorized payer, they finally called us on the phone to make sure we did that. Otherwise I couldn’t have paid her semester bill.

Also if the tax returns are done don’t forget to use the IRS data retrieval tool to link the tax returns to the FAFSA. That way the college knows they have your correct tax information.

@mommdc I constantly check my email for updates on college applications and luckily haven’t received any notices from the FAFSA regarding my application which, I called and confirmed, has been processed. I did receive an email about the TAP application which I used to create my account.

Give it a couple of days (Thursday/Friday) then log on to TAP and you should be able to see your estimated tap award

Good job on staying on top of your email!

Perfect, thank you so much for your help!! @sybbie719 @mommdc
