Tap/ Pell Grant over payment

If you can, I would recommend going to see them either in person or calling them on the phone. It is highly unlikely that they will release the information you need without speaking with a live person (you).

@sybbie719 I live about four hours away now. I’ve been calling now for two days trying to reach a live person but each time they seem to be experiencing high call volume and the call disconnects or like today I spent my whole lunch break on hold and had to hang up because the wait time exceeded 30 minutes. I wish I was closer because I would love to discuss this in person with a department head.

I’ll give them until next Thursday to respond as I know it takes a couple days of processing when a debt is taken out of collections and placed back with the original account. Which also makes me think they know that their was an error on their end otherwise they would’ve advised me to deal directly with the collection agency.

Thanks for all the input and advice on this situation. I truly do appreciate it.

Update:

After many calls I finally received an e mail from the Bursar’s office notifying me that their VA Rep would reach out to me. I decided to do my own research and pulled this directly from the city college/CUNY website

TAP Information (New York state residents)

TUITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (TAP) - is a New York State education grant which assists full-time (12 or more credits), undergraduate students with their tuition costs. You must be a legal resident of New York State. (If you are considered to be a dependent student your parents must also be New York State residents.) You must be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. Students and/or their parent(s) must also meet certain income criteria and must not have exhausted their TAP eligibility, which for most students is eight (8) semesters. If you receive a TAP award, the money goes directly to the college for payment of your tuition.

So therefore no TAP money was ever directly forwarded to myself. Tap was received by the school. So the school would need to send those funds back to the state and the VA would pay the difference from the time of which I was attending. I did call and speak to a VA representative who did confirm that they can and would still pay monies due to the school but recommended the school reps call them directly. Now I am just waiting for the bursar’s office to reach out so I can direct them to the va themselves to handle this manner.
