I've recently been hearing rumors that the TAP program almost guarantees you acceptance, or, at least puts you at a very high advantage to those not in the TAP program to both UCB & HAAS - can someone confirm this?

Thank you.

I've recently been hearing rumors that the TAP program almost guarantees you acceptance, or, at least puts you at a very high advantage to those not in the TAP program to both UCB & HAAS - can someone confirm this?

Thank you.

Um...I wouldn't really say it gives you any sort of advantage in admissions. Basically it's a program for underprivileged CC students who can meet with a Berekeley rep for counseling, help with the essay/application process and other little perks.

From what I was told, this program goes onto your application/resume, I'd assume there is some benefit to this. Have you met with Keith Schoon? He manages the problem - very helpful individual.

Hm, never really knew it like that. I'm actually really curious about this program now that I hear it may have an edge in admissions. Do you know how exactly one would join the Berkeley TAP program? I believe only a selected number of CCs are participating in it.

I think this year about 90% of the students in the TAP program got in. I know 2 individuals that got into Haas from the TAP program.

Unfortunately the program is full for this years Fall term. Admission into the program is pretty strict, there are very specific guidelines. I was just curious if theres a competitive edge.

LOLOLOLOL
rusky i for one am tap and haas
let me give u the REAL info
tap helps u in 3 things if ur applying for L&S
2 things if ur applying for haas
number 1.
they help u make sure ur application and everything is in order. they check if ur essays answer the question and thats about it for number 1
number 2.
they give opportunities to people to visit berkeley in the summer.
number 3.
here is where it DOES NOT apply to haas applicants. if u get rejected, they write a letter of recommendation for you during your appeal. it does kick u over the line if ur borderline. but then again this does NOT apply for haas applicants.

people join tap mainly for the purpose of number 3, cuz it does directly affect ur admission. other than that if u can't even do ur application right then u probably aren't the right material for haas.
please do not say tap was of great help for haas admissions.
cuz
it
does
not

let me add a few things. if ur in the tap program and ur applying for haas, the first few appointments with an adviser, the whole content of the conversation was to explore our choices other than haas.
think about this, if a high number of applicants were applying for haas and got rejected, it would definitely bring down their acceptance rate ratio.
unfortunately many of the people i knew changed to poly sci or w/e. well they'd rather be in berkeley than risk being rejected altogether.
the programs held by tap were helpful, but nothing new if u do visit ur college transfer advisers. as i said the best they have to offer is allowing u to visit berkeley for a few days at their expense.
other than that, my experience tap was not a very pleasant 1 with a ton of complication generated from their side.

Thanks for the information. I didn't advertise that it was "great help" for Haas admissions, instead I wanted clarification from what I heard. Thanks for your input, very helpful.

Great stuff, Guardiangel. Honestly, even though it might not directly affect admissions in a significant way, I don't think it would hurt to still join.

Russkiy: Do you mean that the program is full for your CC in particular for the fall or all CCs?

The TAP program is hosted at UC Berkeley, they arent accepting anymore applicants regardless of school.

I still believe TAP definitely helps you in getting into Haas, however you would already have to be a very good student but if your borderline or even a little below borderline it could definitely help.

So are they opening enrollment into the program in the spring? Do I just go to my school's transfer center and ask about it?

I would contact the Berkeley rep at your school and ask them about it. The program is usually reserved for low to middle income, first generation college students, and underrepresented students.

I'm not first generation or underrepresented, but I am low to middle income. Do you think I'd still qualify?

They aren't taking anymore students - regardless if you fit their criteria.

I was asking about the spring semester. Please see post #12.

Well I don't know if they are not accepting anymore students or when they will as I am no longer apart of the program. But to answer your question, I really don't know if you would be accepted or not. Its really up to the people running the program.

jk_91 - from what I was told, the TAP program is only a Fall program.

I'm in the program... but I just joined at the end of July so I wasn't able to take advantage of the summer program. Darn. :(

Its not just a fall program, the people at TAP just want to make sure that students are in the program at least a year and not just a semester.
