Hi, if my junior college (MPC) don't have any honors program does that mean that I can't do any TAP with the uc's?

You can’t do TAP with UCLA because they have affiliations with certain schools only, but you can still apply with TAG for SD, I, SB, R, M, D, and SC.

What is the difference b/w TAP and TAG? Also I read it somewhere that you have to take 6 honor classes to be in the program is that true?

^ it all depends on your honors program. My CC required 18 units of honors course work but I saw someone else on another thread only needed 15 units.

^ the honor program of my cc only require 15 units.

MPC as in Monterey Peninsula College right?

If so, I can tell you for a fact that MPC doesn’t offer a TAP program with UCLA. Because MPC is so small, it cannot offer any honors sections, the school simply doesn’t have enough enrollment. However, the school does offer a TAG program with UCSC, UCSD, and UCSB. You should set up an appointment with a counselor to see the requirements for each individual program.

If you’re also interested in more transfer help I suggest you set up an appointment with the UC Counselor Debbie Anthony. I found her very helpful as she really does give good info and is very easy to approach. I myself will be leaving MPC this fall and attending UCLA so if you have any particular questions for me, the summer would be the time to ask.

The Difference Between TAP & TAG is simple.

TAG is a Transfer Guarantee

TAP is a program offered by UCLA (some schools) and Berkeley (some schools) that gives applicants an edge over other applicants with the completion of X units of honors courses.

You don’t need TAP. Just get a monster GPA and that stuff is moot.

For certain majors cough bizecon, Haas, cough, TAP can make or break you.

Got into Berkeley Econ and UCLA Econ without TAP. Cough.

You apply for TAG personally. TAG is for any applicant interested who has fulfilled the requirements (which aren’t that much, really). For TAP, you have to apply through and be certified by your school.

i have been recently looking into both TAG and TAP programs. my cc offers the TAP program with UCLA. being that the TAP program doesnt guarantee a student admission to UC and only gives you that “edge” is it possible to do both?

@CollegeHopeful
I applaud you on your accomplishments, however, I was explicitly referring to the Business majors. Furthermore, yes, it is possible to get into the biz majors without TAP (Especially for Haas, Berkeley’s TAP program is small). Nonetheless, having TAP will significantly increase your chances of admission.

The word “edge” is being used lightly. TAP significantly increases one’s chances of admission to UCLA/Berkeley. If your CC offers the TAP program, and you feel like you have the time to complete the honors courses, I see no reason why you should pass up the opportunity.
