tape

what kind of tape do you use to put stuff up on your dorm wall that won't leave any marks when you take it off and no holes.

i want to get a wall mirror so i bought mounting tape, now i don't even know if that will do because it said that you need a knife to scrap it off the wall if you want to remove it

and what tape would your recomend for posters and hanging string lamps

i know white funtak would work for posters. well what do you use?

3M makes a mounting tape thing that when you want off the wall you pull this tab at the bottom and it comes off without a mark. They sell it all over.

636

i heard duct tape works well

poster putty (haven't tried it for string lamps--those might be too heavy)

duct tape can leave nasty residue - but that's what goo-gone is for.

for light weight stuff (like posters) just regular scotch tape or painters tape is fine. I don't know what would hold up a wall mirror though that wouldn't be totally a pain to get off.

^ seconded about the duct tape

if you know any theatre people, see if you can get your hands on some gaffers tape. it holds up really well w/o the nasty residue

I used sticky tack to put a pennant on my wall. It's a blue sticky material that sort of feels like silly putty. Most every college bookstore should have something like this--I've seen it at the half dozen or so bookstores I've visited. Fun Tak is a common name, I think DAP makes that brand.

Sticky tack won't ruin your paint or walls, it sticks well, and it's reusable. Scotch tape can take paint off, especially if the room is drywalled. Concrete and brick walls don't have this problem as much.

It should be about three bucks for a package. Compared to what you could be paying in paint charges I think it's a good deal, considering you can use it over and over. Sticky tack is also popular in elementary school classrooms for hanging posters up--my first grade teacher had a huge ball of sticky tack and would hang everything with it. I never once saw something come down in her room.

i dont know if you already have the mirror, but some come with these hook things that you can use to hang it over a door, they require no adhesive, just screw them on to the mirror, and then it simply hangs over the top of the door. They should be designed so that they are thin enough to allow your door to still close.

ughh...goo gone is definitely an outdoors type solution. Not really sure it would go over too well in a dorm room, unless you had big windows with fans to vent. Best to just leave the duct tape out :)

Sticky tack is definitely best for posters.

For string lamps, I'd get some of those little tacks that are used for bulletin boards if your walls aren't concrete-ish. They just leave a tiny hole, so I doubt anyone would notice or say anything. If the walls are concrete-ish I'm not really sure what would work best.

If the walls aren't concrete-ish, just put a couple nails/screws in the wall to hold up the mirror and fix the holes with a bit of putty and paint when you move out. They can't get mad if they never know.

i can't stand sticky tape. try 3m command strips - the poster strips are sold at walmart like 12 in a pack for 2 bucks.
