I do not like the Tar Heels, but wonder do Dookies prefer Iraq over UNC?

I find it somewhat amusing that if I do somehow get into Duke this Wednesday, I will be deciding between it and UNC (and Davidson)

Go figure.

Me too, heathergee (except that it's Wake Forest instead of Davidson).

Superiority?

I know I'm not speaking for every Blue Devil or Tar Heel, but there's not any rancor between the schools (okay maybe a little bit here and there). Overall, there is respect between the two. I mean many of us are friends with UNC students and see them when we're out at the movies or shopping or just out to eat. We are only a couple of minutes away from each other. There's a bus that runs between the schools every half an hour or hour, and students can take classes at the other school's campus (if they're only taught at one school). We joke around with UNC students and they joke with us about sports and which university is better, but for the most part it's all in good fun. But let me tell you, when we're playing them: GO TO HELL CAROLINA!

it's "dukies", not "dookies" lol

Dook sucks

Where's Dook?

as someone who's from NC, I'd say that honestly it's not all "just in good fun"--many people from one school flat out just don't like the other (especially if they were raised in the Carolinas or Virginia, etc.), and that's what makes the rivalry so great-it has edge and passion

Agreed. I can't stand the Duke vibe. Did I just say that on the Duke forum?

To clarify, I meant "just in good fun" in terms of talking with my friends at UNC about the basketball teams and taking juvenile cheap shots at other players. We know both sides have their merits.
elpope-you are right that there are people who flat out don't like the other school and the passion is great for the rivalry. I guess each person has his or her oown opinion on it. I flat out want to beat Carolina every time and invest a lot of emotion into it, but I have a respect for UNC as well.

As a North Carolinian, I can say that fan/students of the two usually have plenty of respect for the other as a school. When it comes to sports, however, things are totally different. Of course, there are people out there who would rather die than go to Duke/UNC hospital (I've actually heard this said seriously). There are also people like my friend, whose parents would refuse to pay a cent of a Duke tuition despite the fact that he would have a good shot to get in. He's the same guy who called Duke just to ask them to take him off their mailing list.

Do "dookies" prefer Iraq over UNC? Huh? I don't get it.

^The question was not literal. "Just how much do Duke fans hate UNC?"

Dookies is correct.Check out Will Blythe's To Hate Like This Is To Be Happy Forever. There is some serious pathology going on. I personally think UNC fans hate Duke more than the other way around, but I could be wrong.

In what sense? I wouldn't mind visiting, but I'd rather not be battling insurgents.

From personal experience I would agree that Carolina fans usually get much nastier than Duke fans, but as duke25 said, it's not a big deal. I've taken courses over at Chapel Hill, and I often deck out in full Duke gear. I get stares, but nobody says anything (except for one guy who asked me if I had lost a bet). :D I was a bit cautious after the Hansbrough incident, though...

If Duke were to play for example the Ramadi Car Bombers or a similar Iraqi team, would UNC fans pull for Duke or the Iraqi team? Obviously it is a rhetorical ?, but ???? Again, I refer to Blythe's book which leaves me wondering about the answer to this ? It's all in fun.

The rivalry can't be as bad as UM/OSU. I'm a Buckeye and I would probably sell my soul to the devil (or worse: attend community college) before I ever attend Michigan.

^
That sounds about right. These kids have been incoctrinated from an early age. Cut them and they bleed blue.

To answer your question, Palmettoman, I believe there's a UNC facebook group called "If Duke plays NC State, I'll cheer for someone to break a leg."

No, it's worse, because unlike UM/OSU there are many Duke fans in NC, whereas you will never find an OSU fan in Michigan or vice versa. If a kid is, say, a Duke fan in a mostly pro-UNC school, he might not even go the next day to avoid all the snide remarks (and no, overreactive CC posters, it's not bullying, just more like constant nagging).

^That's actually true.
