Target Engineering Schools?

Prospective Career: Chemical Engineering

As you can see in the link, I have found plenty of reach schools to apply to. However, I'm have trouble coming up with a target list - places where I have a decent, but not guaranteed, chance of getting into. Keep in mind that they should be more attractive than UT-Austin with in-state tuition, as I have automatic admission there.

Thank you!

Are you sure that you are auto-admit to your major at UT Austin? If not, you may have to add an additional safety where you are auto-admit to your major and which is easily affordable.

If no school besides MIT or UT Austin is more desirable to you than your safety, then your application list will be complete once you find a safety that you are auto-admit for your major and which is easily affordable.

It really depends on what you decide is “attractive”. UT Austin as a top notch school and in-state for you means reasonable cost. Given the stats you liked in your other post, you are competitive for just about any school, however, the most selective are reaches for everyone.

If you could categorize the kind of school you would consider then the answer to your question might become clearer.

@ucbalumnus: Automatic admission covers my major (Engineering), given that I pass certain requirements (which I have), it’s just the Engineering Honors Program which is not guaranteed.

@xraymancs: It’s kind of hard to determine, to be honest. Any general list of colleges that fall between UT-Austin and schools like MIT/Stanford/Cornell would be helpful, as I could determine which ones would fit for me.

Thanks!

There is no reason you have to have any schools in the reach and match categories if you do not prefer any of them over your safety. Any such schools are optional additions to your application list.

Indeed, at your stats, there are not that many match schools for admissions (as opposed to safety and reach-for-everyone schools). Berkeley may be, but is probably too expensive as an out-of-state student.

If money is a big concern, you can also try targeting some of the full ride scholarships like Du Pont at Delaware, Park at NCSU, and President’s at Georgia Tech (see http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1461983-competitive-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-4.html#post16224918</a> and http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-19.html#post16145676</a> ).

Ok, thank you!

Maybe look at Rice, you look like you have a shot at some merit.

@barrk123: Yeah, I’m applying to Rice

If you are an automatic admit to UT with in state tuition, and you would be happy going there, I don’t think you need any other matches. You might get merit aid at a school like GA Tech, but it likely would end up costing more than UT.
