I'm looking to go to a school for computer science but I only have a GPA of about 3.2. I was hoping for some help looking for target schools for me. I would love to be in California, preferably the Los Angeles area, however, I am willing to look anywhere but the warmer the better. Also I want to go to a medium to large school. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cost constraints? State of residency?

Much will depend on how much your parents will pay. OOS publics don’t give much aid to OOS students. And the privates that give the best aid often require higher GPAs.

What are your test scores?

How much will your parents pay?

You’re in luck because California is home to Silicon Valley. The UC schools are pretty reputable for computer science…I’d look them up to see which matches your profile best.

^^
The student is not instate to Calif. He wants UCs, but his GPA isn’t high enough as an OOS student.

Much will depend on how much his family will pay. OOS publics don’t give great aid unless it’s UNC-Chapel Hill or UVA.

Oh, okay. Well I’d still recommend looking into the UC schools (not so much Berkeley and UCLA as the other, less selective ones, based on your stats).

The UCs have a minimum GPA for OOS students and this student doesn’t have the req’d minimum.

Maybe UCR or UCM or UCSC will make an exception. Very doubtful the other would.

Anyway, if his parents won’t pay the OOS tuition, then it’s moot point.

As others have noted, 3.2 won’t get you into a UC. Your So Cal CSU options are somewhat limited as well - maybe San Marcos or Channel Island but, neither is known for CS. In N Cal, check out Sac State - Plenty warm but 100 miles from the Pacific. If you have solid test scores, San Jose State (in Silicon Valley) and Chico are also options. CS East Bay may be worth a look as well.

Southern California CSUs with CS include Pomona, Dominguez Hills, Fullerton, Long Beach, Los Angeles, Northridge, San Bernardino, San Diego. CSUs’ list price is not that high, but do not expect much or any financial aid for non-California residents. Note that many CSUs are heavily commuter-oriented.

A UC-weighted GPA of 3.4 is the minimum for non-California residents. UC financial aid will not cover the $23,000 additional non-resident tuition.

My current place of res is in New Hampshire and fortunately the price of the college isn’t really an issue

Try LSU since money isn’t a concern.

I think the CSUs will be too-commuter for a NH resident.

Are you considering other states?

Honestly I am willing to look anywhere. The only reason I was thinking California is because it is ultimately where I want to end up and I was thinking it would be good to be near internships in college. Plus the weather doesn’t hurt.

oops…I meant to write…LMU Sorry.

No worries.

San Jose State and Santa Clara are in a great location for a CS major.

For San Jose State, the admission thresholds for the recent past are here:

Note that the CSU eligibility index referenced there is calculated by:

How is San Jose State for OOS students?

SCU would be great. Don’t know if student’s stats would make it a high reach.

Confused Carl…what is your SAT?

What are your safety schools???

Currently my only two safety schools are UNH and UVM since my high school is fairly high ranked and well known in the state and almost everyone who applies with reasonable grades from my school gets in. As for SATs I just recently took them dry (no prep classes and very little studying) as a baseline and should be getting those scores back tomorrow so I’ll keep you posted.

SJSU appears to have about half residential and half commuter students, based on the percentage of frosh living in the campus residence halls (space is guaranteed for frosh). But most students live off-campus after frosh year.

Out of state cost of attendance is about $35,000 per year.

Does anyone have any recommendations perhaps outside of California?
