TAs

Is anyone else here TAing this year? To what extent?

My daughter is TA in a AP Physics C class this semester. She had an open period and did not like any of the other options.

In an AP class? Wow! Does she get teaching time?

TA or “Lab Assistant” (as it’s called for science classes) for the second year in a row here! TAed for frosh bio last year, AP Chem this year.

My son is doing it for the second year in an AP class. His schedule just calls it “study hall.” Does anyone have advice on how to reflect it on his college application? The teacher is writing one of his recommendations so maybe he can mention it.

@basedchem Cool! I’m TAing for sophomore Chem which I picked over freshman Bio. I’m also the lab assistant.

@ospreycv22 The teacher I’m working with told me she mentioned it in my rec as well. I’m putting it down as an EC on my resume as well as the college app – it can also go down as an internship or community service.

Yup! I rotate between 3 different classes! I really enjoy it.

TAing has an additional benefit over enjoyment and letters of reference. Teaching someone else is one of the best ways of studying content and procedures. Do I know the information well enough to explain it to someone else that is clear, accurate, useful, etc? If you find yourself in a muddle, teaching helps clarify how, when and why you are confused. Hearing how others approach a task or think about information expands your understanding of that information. Teaching is studying.

@zannah I totally agree! My first week went well – I do the lab and grade the tests from the lecture classes, which is three periods worth, plus another lab period. I get out of an elective to do the lab.

The first week went really well. I had some class control issues today, but it’s a very big lab and that’s to be expected. The other labs this week went fine and guys listened for the most part and turned in decent reports.
