We have recently started the boarding school process for our third. Unlike our first two, she is really interested in going outside the US for school. So far, her top two choices are The American School in Switzerland and Leysin American School. Both schools look very good, but we'd really like some firsthand knowledge of the schools. Can anyone provide us with any? We're looking for both positives and negatives for both schools. Thank you.

Both schools, from what I know, are great schools.

Notes:
-I’ve heard (but I don’t know for sure) that the academics at TASIS Switzerland aren’t quite as good as the academics at TASIS England.
-TASIS has a good number of day students, while Leysin is 100% boarding
-Both offer the IB program.
-TASIS costs a little bit more than Leysin, from what I can tell from the websites. Both schools cost at least $70,000 a year in tuition, room, and board. And neither offers much in the way of scholarships.
-TASIS is more Italian, Leysin is more French
-Both have beautiful campuses
-Both offer ski trips at some point during the school year
-Both have formal dress codes

I would also look into Aiglon College. College Alpin Beau Soleil and Institut le Rosey are also good schools, but even more expensive than TASIS and Leysin.

I happened upon this post and wanted to respond, as I have first-hand knowledge of one of the schools in question.I am the Headmaster and a parent of two students at TASIS, The American School in Switzerland. I would be happy to answer any of your questions directly or put you in touch with our Admission office at admissions@tasis.ch.

We can also connect you with current and former TASIS families who can share their experiences (unvarnished by administrative bias :)) directly with you. Of course nothing can replace a pair of campus visits, which would make the differences in our two strong schools most clear.

Warm regards from sunny Lugano,

Greetings,

I am Leysin’s Director of Admissions for the Americas and have been with the school for 11 years. Both LAS and TASIS are wonderful and your daughter would have a great experience at either. That said, there are differences. My 2 kids have attended LAS so I can give you my perspective as both a parent and school representative. Please email me at admissions@las.ch so we can connect…

One correction to the post above from spencethegirl. Leysin is actually a ski resort and the lift is 5 minutes from school. Our kids ski all the time!

We also can provide references from current and former parents.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping with your search.

Best Wishes,
Paul E. Dyer
