Tasp 2007

Turns out that I'm actually being interviewed by a panel. The woman who contacted me is a grad student at Yale (thank you google), so I'm assuming most of the others on the panel are from Yale too.

Damn. However, I think having a panel makes it all the more fun...but a lot harder.

yeesh, g'luck iris. although a couple of people said having more than one person makes the interview a lot easier, since it's not as much an interrogation but rather a discussion.

what date did you guys set for your interviews?

I have a general question...

Is it ok if your opinions have changed from the time you have written the essay to the interview? How do you explain it? Does it matter if its a small change or a drastic change?

the best thing about having a panel is if you do well you'll have more people vouching for you when they're deciding who gets in

Do the interviewers generally voucher for you? I've thought of that. How does the interviewer accounts factor into the decisions?

The interview and the essay together decide your admissions decision. Note, however, that only about ~20% of the essay-writers are selected for interview, while ~50% of the interviewed will invited to TASP.

I think the interviewers are generally honest- it is up to you whether they'll vouch for you or not. But they will definitely not go easy on you. If your opinions have changed from the essay, at least in my case, they will challenge you with both your essay's evidence and their own ponderings. They're friendly about it though, so don't feel intimidated. At the end of the interview, you'll have a chance to ask them about what TASP was like, rules, effect on life, etc.

Panel means less awkward silences anyway :).

Don't worry if you guys get rejected though! Last year, when I applied, 2/11 people in my school got an interview. Almost all 9 of the people who got rejected, were accepted early into the Ivy League. You'll miss out on some life-changing experiences/smart friends/generally great times, but Telluride is not THE judge of worth.

Thanks for the info butcherer! (though scary name!)

Okay, COMPLETELY off-topic but I need a place to rant.

I'm so frustrated by people with so much more resources than I do. I don't mean to say I don't have any (I am very grateful for the things I have), but sometimes it just gets on my nerves. Especially with things like Science Fair. The participants from private schools/rich families can afford to have REALLY professional-looking boards and get to do very advanced stuff, but many people there just CAN'T because they don't have access to certain materials/labs. IT'S SO UNFAIR SOMETIMES! (And yes, I know "life's unfair" but still!!!)

And I'm actually very fortunate in that I do have lab access and I can do something cool, but many people there who could have done just as well have relatively uninteresting topics/data simply because they can only work with things at their disposal (i.e. stuff around the house/school). It almost feel like a race to see who's the richest, and like I said I'm not exactly innocent of the practice either but... GOSH. And COLLEGES look at INTEL Science Fair... IT'S SO UNFAIR... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

end of rant

OMG i thought the same exact thing when I was preparing for INTEL. I gave up on it my project after going to last years because I realized I could never stand a chance. I have money but science fair projects are not in my families budget. I also realized I would stand no chance since my project needed very strong equipment that I didn't have. In fact, it was an astronomy project so unless I bought a house in the middle of the country where it is deserted I couldn't have done the project. Even if I had access to good facilities and stuff (I live in central NJ. The sky NEVER gets dark here. At 3 AM i sometimes go outside and read with no artificial light needed.).

karen, thanks for the input.

And yeah, I feel like a deluded fool thinking maybe I could get into INTEL which sounds like such a fun experience to have. After seeing some people w/ their crazy project + professionalized boards, etc. I almost feel like there's no way I can make it. Some people even had flow cytometry machines. WHAT ON EARTH!? The lab my dad works in doesn't even have that.

What a rigged competition. Still, I can't give up hope yet! (Don't worry, you'll see me back here ranting again after I get like... 10000000000000th place or something, lol)

i don't even know what this intel science fair crap is

so ha

nate you're so.....idk how to describe you. You're just so....yeah....

lol. you're the master of words. Evidently, I am not.

the words i guess i'm just better than you come to mind :-P

wow i should just enclose everything i say in that

ahem, i mean.... the words wow i should just enclose everything i say in that come to mind

okay.... whatever

oh and you are better than me. That's a known fact. But I really don't care. =) I'm in a very very happy mood right now and not even you, you master of words, will take me down.

goes and watches the moviefilm of the real master of words
borat

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

there were only a million ha's there to fill 10 char without actually counting 10 characters. Now that i'm writing this explanation though, I don't really see the point.

oh and no

+10char

Lol Dont worry if your opinions change, matter of fact they will like that. Just make sure you can assert yourself and have a reason for your change.
For example I read a book on the seminar topic I said "would be a disservice to myself by attending" and my stance changed, however its still my last choice. :)
