My interview is on the 29th of March at Borders bookstore.

I don't know whether to be scared, excited, or relieved.

Excited! Of course. Enthusiasm is important. If you truly are passionate about the ideas you talked about in your essay/will talk about in your interview, it will show and reflect favorably upon your evaluation.

Okay, so I've just had my interview today, at a local Starbucks. It was, in a word, invigorating. Really fascinating. I had three interviewers, all former TASP-ers, who were very engaging. Not intimidating as I had imagined. Right now I am still a bit dazed, and speaking in fragments, but if anyone should have any questions I'd be happy to help! :)

My 2 cents: Make certain to read and know your essays backward and forward; but don't be afraid to be flexible! Also, don't be intimidated by any note-taking on the part of the interviewer(s), and try to think of some questions about TASP that you'd like to get answered ahead of time. Anecdotes help, too.

Best wishes to everyone!

Wow, congrats daenerys!! Nice to hear you had a nice time... (not our picture of a TASP interview haha)

What were some of the questions they asked you?

Celita: I think that really depends on what you wrote. Part of what I loved about the TASP interview was that it seemed very free-flowing, as opposed to being structured. In my case, we basically went through each of the essays (including the extracurricular/activities sheet), touching on some of the themes I expressed and perhaps going on tangents every now and then. Often I was asked to find a connection between two different themes (for instance, the relationship between science and morality, the role of technology in the past, the definition of truth in history, etc.)

Don't be surprised if a current events topic is brought up. Toward the end, for example, I was asked a few questions concerning the current political scene (my opinions on government policy, and so forth), a subject that I certainly had not anticipated, but which I found interesting nonetheless. All in all, the interview was really fun, honestly, and I definitely think it's an experience that will remain with me regardless of whether I am accepted.

lol, my interview wasn't quite as life-altering as daenerys (is your name from the GRRM books? if so, love your taste). but it was fun for sure.

i can't remember any of the questions, but i remember talking a lot about myself, my school, my e-c's, my essays, my choice of books, etc.

think of it less of an interview and more like a conversation with God (is that trademarked?). j/k. just be yourself (sorry for the cliche! (is the acknowledgement of the cliche a cliche in itself now?)). The questions the interviewers give you will give you a chance to show off your intelligence, even if you're a terrible public speaker like me =P

Haha yep, my favorite character from A Song of Ice and Fire!

As for cliches, I think that however cheesy they are, 90% of them do turn out to be true...

Just out of curiosity...can we compile another list of the interviewees WITH their location? I wonder what the geographic spread for TASP 2007 looks like..

I'll start

1) avonlea: Chandler, AZ

1) avonlea: Chandler, AZ
2) tako: Cupertino, CA

OMG I just came to the most amazing realization. I am a Canadian (no, that is not my revelation). Had I stayed in Canada, I would have been a crazy drunken wild fraternizing probably sexually active party nymphomaniac!

Haha I'm facebooking all of my old friends...amazing. I wouldn't even care about school. I wouldn't care about college, and wouldn't be on this forum on a Friday night, I'd probably have some beach party to attend.

I'm jealous :(

Ummm Tako. I tried to facebook you, however, there are like 5 Junior Jennys at MV... :-P

The randomest things keep reminding me of TASS and than I get excited for my interview. :D

Ahh tonight was terrible. 71 kids came to the dance :( After all of the commissioners ate sour patch kids all night from the snack shack I doubt we broke even :-/.... W/e I'm over it

daenerys: Alpharetta, GA

my life is uniquely wrapped in a cliche
maybe everyone's life is "neatly" wrapped in an ironic cliche (because of their knowledge vs their reality, etc...)

I'm Jenny SUN, Corey :)

Not Jennifer, mind you. There's a Jennifer Sun, and that is not me! Ahaha.

I'm sorry that your dance did not turn out well...

Now I am off to go dress shopping...for junior prom...lalala GROSS DRESSES :P

Anyone here have Jay Sosa from Philly? He was my interviewer last year. Cool guy... wish I kept in touch with him afterwards.

Nate- 2 words: HOLY S-H-I-T

Have you ever come down to our mountains in jersey? Let me just say my ass hurts soooo much right now. Oh you can actually see the stars up here. I love it <3 It's so pretty and free up here.

Tako- good luck finding a dress. They're not that bad.

Congrats all of you that thought your interview went well!!

Btw, not to make anyone freaked or anything, but I talked to my factotum extensively about interviews and how they made decisions.

Turns out even though people were "strongly recommended" to go to the program they weren't selected. As for me, I thought I had done very poorly in my interview, and still got in.

In sum, it's very much like college. There's no "one thing." But I'm sure, judging by the number of posts/user, you all know this by now. Best of luck!

^^

that doesn't make sense at all lol...

maybe the interview doesn't count nearly as much as the essays?

justanotherCCer, thanks for posting and sharing your knowledge! :) I wanted to know, what exactly do they look for in the interview? Like when they take notes, what are they taking notes of? Whether you stuttered or not? (obviously not, but still, I'm not really sure what is the evaluation).

Interviewers will write down notes for themselves, to be compiled into a final report after you've left, which includes a recommendation to TA. Final selection and seminar assignment, I believe, is done at Cornell.

Woo Cornell.

They ask about your extracurrics? Mine have changed a bit. Model UN turned out to be a bit of a joke...after the Yale conference it petered out and we didn't even do a recruits debate. =/ I guess I'll have to explain how lame that exded up being.

Home from the boarding school for a few hours! Yay!
