tasp interview tips

Rbase07: if you have no experience with TASP or the Telluride Association, aren't you sort of out of your range here? Tasp interviews are not like a typical college or scholarship interview, and yes, they are very very very difficult.

I'm a former TASPer (Michigan '04), and I would have to agree with a previous poster that the TASP interview was one of the most grueling hours of my life. Since I have been interviewed for six colleges--Ivies and the like--and TASP tops them all. I was interviewed by the director of the program, a Chicago prosecutor, and a TASP alum/Cornell student at a hotel in Miami Beach. The interview was basically a defense of the essays I had written--a test to see how I can articulate ideas vocally rather than on paper. My advice: know what you wrote. Re-read your essays, and be ready to defend/qualify/expand on them. And be yourself! Good luck!

seriously, its just an interview. You are all making way to much of it.

Did any previous TASP-ers have just one interviewer? I'm only going to be interviewed by just one person. I think this will be much easier than going up against a panel of two or three. Also, my interviewer said that the interview was going to be very informal...is this what other TASP alums had?

Has anyone been contacted about their interviews yet? The letter said March/early April...I'm hoping for the latter because I have so much going on right now.

I got my finalist letter on Thursday and I got a call from a local Telluride representative on Friday afternoon.

i got my notification in the mail this past wednesday, and i just got a call saturday night scheduling my interview, which will take place on march 22. at least i'll get it over with relatively quickly, i suppose. the guy i talked to (college aged kid) said there would be two interviewers, and it's gonna take place at my local bestwestern. i think i can handle this.

You guys haven't had the interviews? I already had it. If you have any questions, contact me!

how was it? as difficult as its being described?

i havent actually been contacted yet but i feel like i might be in a busy area (long island on new york)

The TASP interview cycle hasn't started yet.

if there is more than one interviewer, is the time divided among them? the TASS letter said that the interview would take about 45 minutes.. could this time be altered?

do they look more for what you know or how you think? what kinds of (specific) questions did they ask?

Don't panic in the interviews. Is a piece of cake. I had a really nice discussion w/ my interviewer and also laughed. They also want to see if what you

Don't panic in the interviews. Is a piece of cake. I had a really nice discussion w/ my interviewer and also laughed. They also want to see if what you say matches with what you wrote in the applications. be honest and be yourself. dont even try to be the BEST OF ALL. just be your self. is not a big deal. believe me.

if my opinions have changed since i wrote the essay, can i contradict myself? ><

also, will they ask you random questions about what you haven't written?

my interviewer asked me about my family and questions such as "if i (the interviewer) went to one of your friends and asked to describe me in 3 words, what would they be?" and about your family, some things you have done to your school...

well, i did well because i almost studied the school's site. i knew their mission, philosophy, etc.

er.. school? this is a program, not a school.

navyblue-- feel free to say that your opinions have changed, but be prepared to explain why. tasp loooves changed opinions!

Hey... I just received my notification as a TASP finalist, and I looked through this topic for interview tips. I was wondering about clothes... Although RBase said something about not overdressing, he doesn't seem like much of an authority on this topic.
Bkoolkido, would you mind helping me out? What is acceptable attire for this interview? I wasn't planning on wearing worn jeans and a ripped T-shirt or anything, but I'd really appreciate some help.

I wore western business attire. It seemed appropriate because one of my interviewers wore a tie, and the other two were dressed in business casual.

By all means, avoid going to your interview in tails and a tophat, but if you're a guy, a nice collared shirt and dresspants should be in order - jacket or tie if you're in the mood. Ladies should do "the equivalent." The Association tends to be.. liberal, to say the least (as many progressive intellectual organizations are wont to be) and so there's no stupid dresscode enforcement of girls having to wear skirts, etc.

Look clean and as if you're taking the interview seriously. And then proceed to take the interview seriously. You ought to be fine.
