Tasp

Not even close for me. I keep erasing things I wrote, because if I read what I wrote the previous night the next day, it sounds very stupid for some reason.

;) Eh, I'll get it done.

I looked up this thread because my daughter got an application for this program in the mail just a day or two ago, so should I encourage her to apply? (She's still out of town on a Xmas break trip, coming back today.) I wish I/she had known about this earlier-- if she does apply she doesn't have much time.

And does getting an application mean her PSAT score was good? Her school hasn't told the kids their scores yet--- just curious.

Unless she was nominated by a teacher, her PSAT scores are probably in the 99th percentile, so she probably did really well on it.

I saw there were or was one or some Telluride essay evaluators on this thread. I wanted to ask them or anyone else who has any idea how much minority status factors into the application. I saw on some other thread that a black student with mid 600s on her SAT sections had gone to TASP and is applying to some Ivys. I am a minority and I received an app despite not being in the 99th percentile, and no teacher has yet told me that they nominated me. I was wondering if my ethnicity as checked on the PSAT answer sheet had an effect on my reception of an app and whether that will play a role in the actual admissions process.

I really want the Islam seminar. I'm fascinated by the study of religions. I know a ton about Christianity, but very little about Islam. (plus everybody is going to want the Foreign Policy as subversion seminar).

The islam one looks fascinating. It's a really useful thing to study too, just to be an informed person. It's my 2nd choice (what can I say, i'm obsessed with the civil rights movement:)).

On a totally un-TASP-related note, what is everyone's favorite book/movie/band/etc. I'll start.

Book(s): To Kill a Mockingbird, The Chosen (Chaim Potok), The Poisonwood Bible, All Quiet on the Western Front
Movie: (not a big movie person, btw) Garden State, My House in Umbria
Band(s): Elliott Smith, the Beatles, Death Cab for Cutie, Kings of Convenience, Belle and Sebastian, Sufjan Stevens, the Decemberists (better stop now, this list could go on for years)

Haha, we make our own little mini-threads in here. :)

Books(s): One Hundred Years of Solitude, Grapes of Wrath, Anna Karenina, The Things they Carried, Life of Pi
Movie: Proof...and that's it. Not much of a movie person either, although I did like LOTR.
Band(s): Anything really, as long as the lyrics are not half swear words and its not a rap about nothing.

I have a question for any former TASPers that went to the Cornell program: did you interact w/ people from the other TASP that was there (I'm assuming that there were two cornell TASPs last year too)? Or did they put y'all far away from each other? I'm curious.

Books: The Great Gatsby, This Side of Paradise, Cat's Cradle, The Metrosexual Guide to Style,Harry Potter, Ender's Shadow Series, Snow Crash, Breakfast of Champions, His Dark Materials, Brave New World, Catch-22, Into the Wild

Movies: A Beautiful Mind, The Godfather, Dr. Strangelove, Dead Poets Society, Fight Club, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, This is Spinal Tap, Garden State, Hotel Rwanda, Star Wars Trilogy, 40 Year Old Virgin, Silence of the Lamb

Bands: Franz Ferdinand, Modest Mouse, The Beattles, Kings of Leon, Grateful Dead, Belle and Sebastian, Interpol, Coldplay, Weezer, Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, Eric Clapton,

Books: Blindness, The Cave, The Fountainhead, Anthem, The Great Gatsby, The World's Religions.

Bands: Death Cab for Cutie, Damien Rice, Coldplay, Rilo Kiley, Remy Zero, Coralie Clement, Benjamin Biolay, The Postal Service, The Shins, Keren Ann, and Snow Patrol.

And just for the record, bravos89 is a yupster.

savoirfaire: I LOVE Blindness. I think everybody should read it. It's such an awesome book. Jose Saramago is a great author, and I wish I knew Portuguese.

Hmm... well this is probably sort of late but to answer ceecee003's question about whether or not everyone is a hardcore debater, but:

I wouldn't say EVERYONE was hardcore. We had a bunch of people who were really into politics and that stuff, but I wouldn't say that everyone debated for the sake of debating. I think a better way to put it is that TASPers have opinions, and we're willing to express/play with them. Debating is optional. Besides, "debate" has such a confrontational connotation to it...

PS: Eric Clapton = God.

billybobbyk: i am a cornell 04 tasper - YES, all the cornell taspers live in the same house. in fact, your roommate will be someone from the other tasp. basically the only things the two tasps don't do together are the seminars. other than that, everything is done in one big group. my first choice seminar was at cornell because i thought it was the most interesting, but i feel like going to a cornell tasp just magnifies the experience, because you have 30-odd other taspers around, instead of the usual 18. good luck with the app!

Books: Everything Is Illuminated, Bird By Bird, An Equal Music, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, His Dark Materials.

Movies: I'm not such a movie person, either...but Almost Famous and Shower, maybe. I thought I <3 Huckabees was super cute but I wouldn't say it was my all-time favorite.

Music: The Indigo Girls, Ani Difranco, Sleater Kinney, Damien Rice, Bob Dylan, the Beatles, JOHN COLTRANE, Miles Davis...etc. etc.

hello, kinda phased out here...

i've been searching hours and hours for the application, but i cannot find it...the TASP website seems to be down for me (im in HK)...would anyone have the philanthropic disposition to send me the application (if you pm me, i can give u my email...)?

thanks in advance.

(hopefully, the application is a word document or something...)

I agree; "dynamic discussion" would probably describe it better. Besides, I have an impression that TASPers are very open-minded and prefer exchanging views to proving each other wrong.
