TASS 2019

Hi all! Didn’t see a TASS discussion thread for this year, so decided to start one.
I’m a Canadian sophomore (obviously) who’s really excited for a chance at these awesome programs!
Please share any insights you have on the process!

Hi, I applied this year also. I’m a student from Savannah, GA.

I’m applying too, I’m absolutely terrified. How far along are you guys with your essays? Or have you submitted them already?

Hi guys! I did TASS 2018, it was one of the best summers/life experience. If you need any advice on your applications lmk I’ll be glad to help.

@hopefully21
Have not started lol

Could you possibly help me? I’m pretty confident in my writing skills but can’t think of essay topics

@sunflowers10 forgot to tag you in the comment above

@strive345 Yes!!! So for your first essay with where you feel fortunate/unfortunate with your education, talk about how your education truly impacted you and made you the person you are today. For your second essay about reading a literature piece/listening to a song, find something that really sparks your interest in Black studies. Lastly for the third essay, be reflective. LIKE BE EXTREMELY REFLECTIVE on how you hurt someone in the past and how you grew from it. In your essays, you really want to reflect on how passionate you are in general and show your interest in Black studies and how you can benefit from TASS.

@sunflowers10 Thank you so much for that! I’ve actually been struggling with the list of the favourite books and media - everything I come up with seems so trivial!

Thank you!

@sunflowers10 @hopefully21 For the question about your favorite books, should we just list them or also add a brief description?

@hopefully21 @strive345 When I applied I only listed my favorite books/media. If you are struggling on listing favorite books/media remember things that you truly enjoyed/changed you as a person

Hey! @sunflowers10 I’m applying to TASS as well, and I’m honestly lost on the second prompt on how a text from a movie, book, song, etc. changed my ideas about African American politics, culture, or social life bc my opinions on those aspects haven’t changed at all. If you could help me out, I’d be super grateful!

@blueclouds101 So for your second essay, you may want to talk about an issue in the African American community and expand on that issue based off a certain book/media, I had the same problem last year when my opinion did not really change so you may want to talk about a current issue and how a certain piece got you involved with the situation/did something about it.

@sunflowers10 ah okay, thank you so much

@sunflowers10 how is the format supposed to be for the second prompt? Is it supposed to be an analytic essay or just a reflection of what you learned?

@spark21 In all honesty, it should be both. TASS really wants to see how you show your critical thinking but also a reflection
