TASS Program

Hey CC! I'm interested in applying for the 2013 TASS Program (I'll be a sophomore in the fall). Can anyone who's done TASS tell me about their experience applying and doing the program, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank in advance!

Nice initiative, I am also a sophomore in Fall, and want to apply for TASS. How hard is it? Plus, I saw a majority of African-American people in the photo. There were probably a lot of asians who applied for TASS, so are TASS and other summer programs aimed towards minorities, and as an asian, is it harder to get into? Thanks.

Oh cool! Which state are you from?

Here too…I like to apply but hesitate because I heard the accepted rate is extremely low!

The acceptance rate is low, but no harm in trying. The acceptance rate is lower than Ivy League schools, so you shouldn’t feel to bad if you don’t get accepted.
P.S.- I am from Minnesota. What states are you guys from?

I didn’t even know the acceptance rate was so low. I’m from NYC.

Hi! I’m currently a Junior and I did TASS this summer (2012)
Long story short:
best summer of my life.
Long story long…
The application is long, the interview is elaborate, and the wait is VERY LONG.
but the friends are amazing, being at a college for the entire summer exposes you to a lot of possible opportunities in the future.
Talking about race, there’s definitely majority blacks. However, one of my best friends from there is Latina, and my other is a crazy mix of almost everything. There was also one asian, a few mixed people (half spanish/black, half black/white). But again, majority were black.
The kids were not necessarily 4.0 students, but they were all really intellectual conversationalist and thinkers. Thats what was most interesting, hearing the opinion of 17 other people who do not have the same background at you whether it be, schooling environment (i met people who were homeschooled, went to boarding school, went to private school, went to public school) race (diversity described above) socio economic status (some people talked about using food stamps at grocery stores, others mentioned going shopping with their fathers credit card), or interests (an obsessive runner, creator of an app itunes bought, environmentalist). Honestly, it was a great experience and it is SO WORTH THE APPLICATION PROCESS!!! Even if you dont get in , its amazing practice for college. and if you do get in, you will definitely be so happy. The friends are great, the knowledge is invaluable, and its honestly a once in a lifetime chance/opportunity.
** want to add that the program mostly applies african american applicants which is why the diversity count is so skewed. The content of the TASS seminars is just geared towards issues that are ubiquitous in the african american community, so its not that its harder to get in as an asian, its just that not as many asians are necessarily interested.

Thanks elle for your details. Do they consider international applicants? If yes, what is the accepting rate for international students?

I did TASS this past summer (2012) too! i was an international applicant, so yes they accept internationals. I’m not sure what the acceptance rate for international students is though. This program is definitely worth it! elle did a good job at describing the experience  Also, i wouldn’t worry if you aren’t African American i’m Latina and i loved the program. The material isn’t too difficult, but be ready to think and voice your opinion.

Thanks you guys for explaining, now it sounds even more interesting. What’s the girls to boys ratio?

They dont neccsarily have the same amount every year. I read about one tass that was all girls…mustve been drama
Mine was like, six guys, and 12 girls
You become like family with 99% of the people there

Does TASS have a good reputation in terms of college? Does it look really good on my college resume?

From what I know, it’s the kind of summer program that looks REALLY good on college applications. But at the same time, it’s extremely selective

Do you know what day the applications come out and when we get our acceptances?

I too went to TASS in the summer or 2011, and will say that the program favors African Americans (only 1 Asian present when I went) and the acceptance rate is exceedingly low, as in below 5 percent. However, I will be willing to help any of you get in, as it was a great experience and can read essays, give advice, etc.

Thanks that will be so cool!

Didn’t go to tass, but went to tasp and was given the opportunity to meet amazing, insightful, and passionate tassers. Also a couple of taspers were tass alumni. If you’re a sophomore apply apply apply because the seminars for this year are cool af
