i've seen my friends who go to college suddenly have change in music taste. even rolling stone magazine has a "top 10 college albums" section. the albums in that section are normally made by indie rock bands.

i'll be a freshman in the fall and have an interest in indie and alternative rock. right now, i'm really into against me!, arctic monkeys, belle and sebastian, okkervil river, m.i.a., girl talk, snow patrol, of montreal, etc.

i was big into the smashing pumpkins and radiohead my senior yr hs and first year of college. recently ive been into early modest mouse, deerhunter, animal collective, fleet foxes, and caribou

my roommate last year didnt listen to music at all and finally admitted at the end of the year that he started to like my music, and my roommate this year says he likes country so i might have to use my headphones alot more it looks like

I like mainstream alternative and hard rock like rage against the machine, tool, disturbed, slipknot, nine inch nails as well as lighter bands like smashing pumpkins and radiohead. unfortunately most college aged people don't share our taste of music, everyone seems to like rihanna or kanye west

I wouldn't say that most people change their tastes...they just grow to like more music.

In high school I listened mainly to classic rock and jazz, but now that I've been in college a couple of years I've learned to enjoy hip-hop, other types of rock (i.e. punk, grunge), old-school rap, and (to some extent) techno and pop music. I still listen to jazz and classic rock, though. Being surrounded by other people and their favorite music just adds to your musical vocabulary =P

Well, when I created a station on play.it, my music was listed as: "alternative pop/rock, indie rock, punk revival." But I'll basically listen to anything catchy that I haven't heard a million times over on the radio.

Lately, I've been listening to The Juliana Theory, Over It, Dropping Daylight, Fall Out Boy, We Are the Fury, The Rasmus, Seems So Bright, and The Living End.

What I hated about high school is that everyone listened to the same crap-everything spoon fed to them through VH1 and MTV...I cant wait to go and find better music than Rhihanna and the Pussycat Dolls.

Is it weird though that I cannot stand anything that they have on those channels? Like, I listen to it, I try to like it, but it's like its a freaking formula, everything is the same. ughh Im soo burnt out from the same music :

Im into mostly rap, some alternative stuff and mainstream rock, along with the occasional gospel. Oh and techno from time to time. But yeah i stay bumpin rap music most of the time. I hope my roomate won't hate rap music like a few of my friends do...

College is funny and it's also the place where you're most likely going to see large amounts of music elitists. You know the types? "Hi, I listen to obscure band that no one has ever heard of just because I can. I don't really like their music but I like to be exclusive with my horn-rimmed glasses and as soon as they go mainstream, I am TOTALLY disowning them from my iTunes. Wait. I don't even own an iPod. I bought an iRiver."

Personally, I like jazz but that doesn't stop me from listening to artists like Jay, The Game (LAX is heatrock), Lauryn Hill, John Mayer, etc. I love music. College is a great place to learn about other types.

I'm open-minded about it and I'll give anything a listen at least twice. Right now, I have around 13000 songs (including my CD and Vinyl collection) spanning an innumerable amount of genres - some random, obscure, popular. It's music and I freaking love it.

Some college kids try too hard at times. It's like...great, you like Nouveau Riche & Bedouin Soundclash, but two weeks ago you were most likely singing along to "Bleeding Love" with an A&F polo and some Birkenstocks on. Get over yourself, lol.

randomgrandeur, that was the kind of response i was looking for. i go to a small, left leaning lac, and there are lots of pretentious indie hipsters who are that way. though i like the same music they do, im not as elitist and constantly on the prowl for strange obscure bands. i dont disown music i like either. usually, if i like something and will listen to it consistently, it will stay in my itunes forever.
