Ehh i think tatoos are kind of tacky. Straight edge for lifee. If you think about it, being traditonal and tasteful can be a form of rebellion. Then again, if it helps you sleep better at night (bad joke)… go for it

I used to think so too, but my father passed away in 2005 and ever since then I’ve wanted this tattoo, which is more about my faith in him than anything religious.

I think it’s actually making me lose sleep, though. I’m still up and posting here. :(

my friend has about 11 tattoos and he’s in high school, his wrist tattos didnt really hurt but he said that they tapped a vein and so his bicep started to twitch and shake hardcore, but the tattoo artist said it was normal, so don’t freak out if it happens!

lol wow an arabic straight edge tattoo?

please kill yourself and save humanity from your reproduction

PL, you’re in NYC, right? Do not not not not not not NOT omg not ever just DON’T go to St Mark’s to get a tattoo. Unless it’s Daredevil, but tbh they’re gonna charge you out the ass for what sounds like a simple design. I’d suggest Sacred, on Broadway between Canal and Howard. Clean, beautiful shop, great artists, reasonable prices for NYC. Everyone there is totally capable of executing your design and you can probably just walk in on a day you’re feeling ballsy. Also, Joy Rumore at 1228 Tattoo in Williamsburg is great with text. I haven’t gotten tattooed by her or at that shop, but I hear fantastic things.

Don’t use a topical anesthetic. It can/will alter the way the skin takes in the ink and your tattoo will not look as bright or clear or beautiful as it could and should. The pain is really not that bad–it doesn’t even feel like a needle. And for something that small, it will be over before you know it.

Eat a couple of hours before you go. If you feel like you need to take a pain killer before or after, don’t take asprin. It’s a blood thinner and that’s no bueno for a tattoo. But honestly, you’ll appreciate the entire experience much more if you really feel the whole thing. Bring something to eat right after. You’ll probably be done really quick, like 30 minutes at the most, so probably just a granola bar or something would be good.

Don’t forget to tip your artist! I usually tip $20 for anything up to $100.

Then do something meaningful that’s not tacky. Get his initials tattooed.

i’ve seen way more tacky initial tattoos than non-tacky ones. just sayin.

Thanks ego, for the helpful advice. I’ll pay a couple of those places a visit this weekend and check them out.
And thanks for the anesthetic advice, I’ve done a bit research online but nobody mentioned that.

Some people are just rabidly anti-tattoo, which is something I have never undestood. It is your body, do whatever the hell you want to it. You are already on the right track by thinking it out, doing research, and getting something that is meaningful to you.

The one thing I will say is that I don’t see the wrist as a place where it is easy to hide. That is something to consider. In the future, if you end up working somewhere that requires to you cover tattoos, are you going to want to have to wear long sleeves all the time? Or are you thinking you can cover it up with a watch?

In any case, it is your body. It belong to you. You have every right to do anything you want to it. If you want this tattoo and have put genuine thought into it, then go for it. People who get tattoos that are meaningful to them, for the right reasons (ie. not to honor a dirtbag boyfriend), don’t usually regret them. But let me warn you this, tattoos are like potato chips, you can’t have just one! Everyone I know who ever got a tattoo, including myself, had to do it again.

Don’t worry about the pain. I got one on my ankle, which is a pretty sensitive area, and it wasn’t too bad. The wrist will be more painful than most other places, but nothing you can’t handle.

Thanks for the suggestions.
I’m at the tattoo parlor right now (posting from my iPhone), I’m at Sacred on Broadway - I think it was one of the places ego suggested, and so far it looks like a great choice. The technician seems willing to work with my apprehension and it’s completely relaxed atmosphere. All of the research I did on it last night and this morning suggested it was a solid pick.
We’ll see.
I’m five minutes away from getting my first tattoo.

seriously do not ink up your wrist with foreign lettering

that is the complete opposite of a good idea and you will regret it within hours

hopefully this message reaches you in time

god speed

I actually changed my mind at the last minute; I got his
first name (in English…) with an outline of a heart below it.
I’ll post picture after I can remove that bandages.

It didn’t hurt near as much as I thought it would

That tattoo sounds really tacky. Don’t get it.

Get a tattoo that makes it look like half your face is torn off, and the terminator is underneath. Now that’s original!

you decided on your permanent tattoo design a few minutes before getting it???

ahhhhhhahahahhaha

FYI: your last-minute switch was actually you realizing deep down that you didn’t, in fact, want to get this tattoo at all, but instead of walking out you inked up the first thing you thought of

jeeeeeeeeesus

What are some really good tattoo places in nyc and in nassau county?

Unfortunately, your e-chuckles aren’t correct.
I had a friend draw this pattern around the same time I chose the original design, except I planned to have put some place else and get it after the original design.
Both designs were 4+ years in the making.

In any event, why are you so concerned? If I want to get a chopsticks tattooed on my eyelids, I will. End.

I just got back from Sacred which was near the intersection of Canal and Broadway. I really loved it there and may go back if I decide to get another tattoo.
They were really awesome. Get Mike, if you go. That’s who did my tattoo. He’s really laid back and made me feel comfortable.

it didn’t hurt too much, right? and now you want another?

congrats!
also post a picture :)

Yep. It hurt, but was more of an irritating pain (I think somebody here actually said that) instead of something extraordinarily painful as I was expecting.

I would like another, but I’m going to wait a couple months, maybe even a year to make sure I’m set on getting another.

I’ll post a picture as soon as I get home; I kind of killed the camera on my iPhone by dropping it one too many times.

Thanks for the help, Leah.

yeahhhh! sacred is awesome!

for aftercare i highly suggest unscented alba lotion. they sell it at whole foods. it’s a+++
