For Cornell financial aid we have to mail in the TAX RETURN, SCHEDULE, and W-2.

I have everything ready but I don't know what the SCHEDULE is. What is it?

Also do I have to send in my tax returns? I work at the library ... but I don't think I did my own tax returns.

The tax return is the actual return such as the 1040, 1040a, or 1040ez (which one you do depends on things like your income amount, deductions etc). They are only 1 (1040ez) or 2 (1040 or 1040a) pages long.

You may or may not have schedules depending on your taxes and types of income and how simple or complicated they are. Schedules are basically more details and calculations. For instance self employed people have schedule C. Schedule A is used for itemized deductions. You may or may not have any schedules.

How do you not know if you did your tax returns? The library would not have done them for you.

Yes if you have schedules they will be behind the tax return…on top of the tax return it will say 1040 or something of that sort, and on top of the schedules it should say Schedule A, Schedule B, etc

Haha thanks guys I found it. My parents only gave me the first two sheets to photocopy. However, there were like 5 other sheets after it. So I got that. We dont have a Schedule C because we don’t own a business.

Did you guys send in your OWN TAX RETURNS? From working at the grocery store, or summer job, or tutoring? I never did my taxes, maybe my parents did I don’t know. But I never filed an INCOME TAX RETURN for myself (I’m 17). HOWEVER I’m mailing in my W-2, which I have somehow because my parents did for me it I think.

Your W2 is sent to you by the company you worked for, nothing to do with your parents. All employers are required to provide a W2.

Did you have any taxes deducted? If so you should file even if you are not required to based on income. If you did not earn enough to actually owe taxes you will get a refund of the taxes you paid.

A single person who can be claimed as a dependent on someone elses tax return (likely the case with you) is required to file a return if their earned income is $5700 or more in 2009 (if there is unearned income the cut off may be lower). If your earnings were over this i 2009 you are required to file a return. If your income is below the required amount then you don’t have to file a return but you should file if you had taxes deducted.
