Tax Returns

Were we supposed to send in a 2009 Tax Return/W2 in addition to the FAFSA?

I have the same question. columbia emailed all their applicants to send them in. NYU didnt email me anything about financial aid.

The FAFSA is all they need. If they need anything else, they’ll contact you.

I guess this is a testament of how sucky aid is? lol.

How will they verify if we qualify for federal aid?

Determind,

Based on my conversation with the FA office, NYU appears to strictly rely on the FAFSA. They will base your aid, if applicable, on 2009 income and assets as of the time you push that button to process FAFSA.

I tried to let the FA officer know that our income has changed drastically for 2010, as well as notable change in our assets since 2/10 when we sent in the FAFSA. NO GO! She said that these changes are irrelevant for academic year 2010-2011. She only stated that there is an opportunity to appeal upon hearing about aid 4/1 or later. She said the appeal would be by phone and they can make a determination in a couple of days after that.

I just sense a real unwilingness to even negotiate. Everything is based on that FAFSA and the numbers in effect at the time of submission.

NYU is living up to its reputation for miserly or inadequate aid, unfortunately. At least it looks like it, based on what they rely on solely.
