@lindyk8, if your adjusted income (scholarships + grants + other incomes - tuition - books - school fees) do not exceed the standard deduction of $6,200 for a “single, but dependent” filer, then you don’t owe IRS anything.

@bizmlover‌, there are “strategies” to lower your adjusted gross income. However, I would caution from recommending and posting tax evasion advice on any public forums.

In the event your “erroneously” miscalculated taxes are audited, the penalties range from prison, a fine up to $250,000, and/or repayment of taxes owed with accrued interest from the original due date.
