taxes

Im going to be attending a University soon and will be needing to apply for all the help I can get. I haven't completed my fasfa yet because I haven't filed for taxes recently, (Im dependent from parents now.)
How do I file a complete fasfa without taxes? I just babysit and attend school now. But the last time I filed, they never completed my fasfa because they said they needed my tax returns.
thanks

Do you NEED to file taxes? That is, do you make more than the minimum amount that requires you to file taxes (irs.gov). If not, you don’t need to file in order to receive aid. If you are asked for tax forms, you simply fill out the school’s non taxfiler statement, instead. However, if you make enough money that you are required by law to file taxes, you will not be allowed to receive financial aid if you neglect to file.

What makes you independent of your parents? Age?

Hello,

Yes age, Im 25. So I only claim mine. So if I dont file taxes I can still apply for aid…I just have to fill out another form?

You won’t even have to fill out any other forms unless your college requests them. If you are not selected for verification, they may not ask for anything. Just make sure you really are not required to file taxes. If you are, the FAFSA will reject & your error message will tell you that your earnings exceed the nonfiler maximum and you must file. Otherwise, you are fine. If you don’t earn much, it is possible your school will require an additional form that helps explain how you live on so little income. Again, you will only need to complete that IF your school asks for it.
