I didn't sign up for the TCF bank thing, but I changed my mind the day after orientation ended. I have a few questions.

-Can I call to have it set up and go to a local TCF in Wisconsin to sign the paperwork.

or

-Can I set the entire account up at the local site and still have it linked to my Mcard?

-Also, when we came back from Michigan, we went through Milwaukee and saw a Billboard saying "TCF Bank Free checking meet Free iPod." I looked it up online and they are giving away a free iPod Nano 1GB with a certain type of checking account. Does anyone know if I can get this type of account or any other type of TCF checking account and have it linked to my Mcard?

You can signup aat your local site and have it linked, and I think you should be able to call as well.... not sure about the ipod

BUT, I would highly recommend not banking with TCF... its the most ghetto bank in the entire world. First semester they charged me $2 fees everytime I took money out of the TCF ATMs in the union. It took me an hour at the branch to get my money back. Then, someone signed a check over to me back in Minnesota, and I went to cash it at TCF, and they said I need the person who signed it over to me to be present with his ID... hahahah I haev accounts at wells fargo, merrill lynch and a local bank in MN and I've never dealt with this. Third, I once overdrafted 5 times according to them, but it was actually 1. I had $200 in my account, and made 5 purchases... one for $20, $50, $20, $30, and $220. I thought a direct deposit had already gone thru.... anyways, the $220 charge was the 5th one. Instead of the previous 4 clearing and then having the final one be the overdraft, they rigged it so the $220 one went thru first so all the other 4 were overdrafts. I got it switched after arguing with them for 3 hours in the branch, and then proceeded to close my account. Sorry this is so long, but I would not bank with them if I were you. The iPod may seem nice now, but a long road of frustration will await you. Several of my friends have had similar problems so this is not an unusual case.

I had similar problems as UMrunner. Luckily the staff is so stupid I used a few bizarre logical arguments and managed to get most of my money back.

Anybody use National City? I use it, but I had an account from before college and I only really use ATMs to get money and make a deposit every few months. I'm wondering how good of an option it is for the general student.
