I have recently graduated from TCNJ. Working as a top consultant in NYC. If anyone has any questions about TCNJ -- please let me know, I will try to answer it...

Please discuss what life is like around the campus as far as restaurants, shopping, things to do. I have an accepted freshman who hears that TCNJ is boring with nothing to do and nowhere to go. Rumor has it that there is nothing but cow pastures. How about events on campus - boring or busy?

Also what’s the surrounding area, especially Trenton, like as far as safety - I’ve heard everything from “nice” to “slum”.

TCNJ is a high quality school with a beautiful campus, but we need to be sure.

Thanks

1) Ewing is a very quiet suburban town except for the shenanigans by frats/sororities who rent housing there. DD and 7eleven is nearby [walking distance]. They have a shuttle that takes students to the local mall, etc.

2) The College on the other hand is NOT boring. There is always something to do or someone to talk to, as people are very friendly.

Also the college will finish its multi-million dollar “Campus Town project” by 2013. Which will for sure enhance the attraction of the college:

3) We are actually far away from Trenton. Like 20 min from Trenton proper. So, no such problem with crime, etc. The campus is beautiful and secure.

The Admissions Office seems to work hard to dispel rumors about TCNJ. Nonetheless, my accepted student keeps hearing it is a suitcase college. Although he loves the schools academic feel, he isn’t so sure about the whole social environment. Do the GREATER MAJORITY/MOST students stay at school throughout the weekend? How is attendance at school football games and other sporting events? You’ve been successful with your degree in a “down economy.” Can you tell us a little about your job search: how was recruitment efforts on campus? If you interviewed independently of school recruitment at any firms, how did prospective employers respond to a TCNJ degree/ name recognition? We are visiting again today for “admitted students”, but really appreciate candid replies from alums. Thanks so very much for offering to do this at a time when so many are faced with a BIG decision!

My daughter was offered to TCNJ with a merit scholarship, she was also admitted to 2 of the IVIES. Shw wants to eventually go to medical school, we are concerned about the overall cost. How will you rank her chances of medical school admision if she attends TCNJ.

@momsbroke –
- The College is absolutely NOT a suitcase school. As mentioned before, there is lots of things to do. I only know few students who are commuters or dormers who go home. This is just a myth, may have possibly been true 15 years back when it was Trenton State. However, now it is rarely/never the case.

2) As you know we are a small school, not something like Rutgers NB. But you can read the News from the TCNJ website or online, that our teams do extremely well and win! In major home events the tickets are free and there is lots of school spirit.

3) As a Business student, I can only speak about the recruitment at the Business School. The recruitment is excellent, as you can see from the stats in Bloomberg Businessweek, and you be the judge. TCNJ is well known in most major firms: E&Y, Marril Lynch, Johnson & Johnson, etc.

1) I personally think if someone wants to go to Medical School, going to an expensive private school is a waste of money. The main goal for pre-meds, is not solely the name recognition of the undergrad, but keeping a good GPA to go to Medical School. I know friends who went to Johns Hopkins and Cornell, and still ended up at UMDNJ, where large number of UMDNJ classes are filled with TCNJ alumni; who saved money and had a great experience in TCNJ.

2) 85%-93% of TCNJ pre-meds get into medical school [Rutgers is less-then 20%]. This was level of excellence TCNJ maintained for the past 10 years!

3) If your daughter maintained good grades in High School she will do excellent in TCNJ. The College provides small class sizes where students develop relationships with professors, who help them succeed in what they want to do afterwards – post-graduation.

4) Also, it is good to ask the question – do students graduate ON-TIME in 4 years? The vast majority of TCNJ students graduate on-time, which is higher then NYU, William & Mary or UNC Chapel Hill. This is very important for someone going into Med-School or Grad School. As they save time and money!

5) For the stats on Medical School go to Princeton Review-- [The College of New Jersey](The College of New Jersey - The Princeton Review College Rankings & Reviews)

7) US News & World Report has other stats – such as rank, graduation rate, etc – [College of New Jersey | Best College | US News](http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/college-of-new-jersey-2642)

How is TCNJ ranked?

@sogoodforcollege
TCNJ is one of the most prestigious college in the country (esp. in NJ).
- US News & World Report ranks TCNJ #1 Public College in the Northeastern United States.
- Forbes ranks TCNJ #1 Public College in NJ.
- Kiplinger ranks TCNJ #1 Public College in NJ.
- Barrons ranks TCNJ one of the top 75 “Most Competitive” College in the nation.
- Princeton Review ranks TCNJ as “the best” Public Institution in NJ for undergraduate education.

Wow!! I am from New York, and knew TCNJ is a great school, because my father works at Ernst & Young. Many accounting people that work with my father are from TCNJ. So how did you like the Business School at TCNJ. I am thinking about TCNJ Business School because E&Y hires lots of students from there, so mind as well.

Yup, I loved the Business program at TCNJ. It is always one of the top Business School in the nation, as well as one of the top 3 best Business School in New Jersey. However, I recommend that you know – how much merit scholarship/financial aide TCNJ gives you if you come here from NY. As an out-of-state student, you will pay more – 10k more. So make sure you look at the cost, because there are good Business Schools in NY like NYU/Colombia/Fordham/University of Rochester/Binghamton University/etc.

As for recruitment, I feel the school does a great job in bringing great employers; and the career service is extremely helpful.

I got into the honors program, and at the reception today they said that honors students have the choice not to live in an honors dorm but would have to miss out on the honors freshman seminar. I don’t want to miss this but I was wondering if I’d have a better time NOT living in the honors only dorm? I don’t want to be around people who study all the time haha

Well, all I have to say is the Travers/Wolfe Towers are the BEST dorms for socializing. Although they look like project housing, LOL! But don’t let that fool you. The Towers are great. I would recommend you to get the Towers because, as mentioned, they are excellent for socializing and being a freshman that is first on the list.

As for Honors housing this year, I don’t know which drom will be used for honors students. Usually it is Cromwell, however, they will start renovating it and will not open until 2013. From what I heard, the Honors kids in 2010 and especially 2009 were CRAZY. On several occasions, they would have sex in the open lounge, and people will come in and out, surprisingly they did not even get reported or in trouble; probably because the CAs those years for honors housing were very chill. I am guessing all those years of being a prude and studying hard had to VENT somehow! haha

But ya, get the Towers for freshman housing.
