Tcnj! Bio Program Full!!

Ok. So i got an e-mail a while back stating that my app. was under a 2nd review and that they would have to look at it again. NOW I got this e-mail::

Dear Applicant,

We would like to thank you for your recent application to The College
of New Jersey. Your academic credentials are very impressive, and we
believe that you would be a welcomed addition to our incoming Class of
2011.

Unfortunately, the academic major in which you have expressed interest
has been inundated with highly qualified applicants. The Biology
department is experiencing a tremendous surge in popularity this year, with
the strongest applicant pool of any of our programs. While we would
like to admit every qualified candidate who desires Biology as their
major, TCNJ cannot adequately accommodate such a large number of students
in this department. In fact, it would be a disservice to our students
to admit everyone into Biology, as it would take away from some of the
things that make TCNJ so popular: small classes; a high degree of
faculty-student interaction; and a complete absence of teaching assistants.

Therefore, we would like to offer you an opportunity to select a
different academic program. If you are still interested in The College of
New Jersey and wish to select a new major, please e-mail ...........as soon as possible, but no later than Friday,
March 23rd.
We recognize that many of are considering careers in medicine. Please
be assured that The College of New Jersey enjoys an 86% placement rate
to medical school, regardless of the student?s academic major. As
with law school, medical programs are accepting more and more candidates
from programs outside of the traditional sciences. Medical school will
still be a feasible option for you outside of the Biology department.

We feel it is only fair that someone of your high academic standing be
made aware of the present situation with our Biology applicants. Thank
you for your attention to this matter. Best wishes for the remainder
of your senior year..........................................................................................................................................................................................

It's me again. What does that mean. I called admissions and the lady told me i wasn't in but the e-mail says otherwise. i.e "welcomed addition to.." The lady said that when i picked my other major they would look at my app. again and then tell me. I made sure to ask her when and she said no later than APRIL 1st. That's good and all but if i send it in now i only have 8 days. If i send it in on the deadline date i have even less. I really don't think that they could re-evaluate me in 8 days when it had taken them about 4 months before. Are they letting me down gently or something? Did anyone else get this??

As far as the letter goes, it seems your in if you consider another major. The letter is worded in a way that if you choose another major, u will be in automatically.

That's what i thought but when i talked to the lady. She very rudely said NO and that they would have to look at me again in the context of the school (i picked Psych as my major). But after thinking about it I was like we only have less than 2 weeks left... so there can't be much they can really evaluate. That lady really was a cranky broad. You would think she would be a little nicer. I wasn't even hysterical. Just asking a simple question and she basically brushed me off and then hung up the phone. Plus i don't think that a school would've stated that big of a statement in writing no less if they didn't like me. That lady was big b****

8 days are more than enough to re-evaluate a student, considering that the actual decision-making is done by a committee in 2 minutes after one or two or maybe three people read your entire application and take notes of what they consider to be significant about you(r application).
They only need to alter one of those notes (your major) and your application can go straight to the committee again.

True. Thanx u guys. This is the school that i really want and i've been a virtual recluse freaking out!! i feel a little bit better but i'm afraid if i keep my hopes up something will happen and i'll just get rejected. Plus, i've never really heard of anyone having a situation like mine. So i was having a mild stroke. If there is such a thing

Btw, I don't know if psych was that smart of a choice. There are even more students majoring in psych than in biology right now...
Are you actually obligated to pursue the major you indicate on your application or can you easily switch your major back to biology (or psych) after being accepted?

I got an e-mail from them shortly after the one i just posted yesterday and they said that not only is Bio full but so is Chem. and the Open Science Option. I thought that since Psych is in the Cultural History(not exact name mind you) School i would have more of a shot because most bio majors would either
1. Drop out for one other school that actually lets them keep their major
2. Pick Physics or some other science major in the school of science
3. Or instantly shoot for the mathematics or engineering schools

I sent in my e-mail with my school and major and today i got an e-mail from the Supervisor of Admissions basically saying thanx. and that he got my e-mail. What was weird and correct me if i am wrong. But it wasn't a mass email or anything in fact it was directly addressed it too me with my name. I checked the address and sure enough only my e-mail was enclosed on the TO: box. He also forwarded my e-mail. So i am hoping that i sent it in early enough and he hadn't received many other responses. It might just be wishful thinking. I'm praying for the best/

It would help if i got more feedback please!!

The important part of that original email is "would be a welcome addition." The would is conditional, you know? They're clearly telling you that they'll take a look at you if you consider another major.

Yea but the question is are my chances of getting in a lot stronger?? or am i in the same boat i was in 4 months ago

"Yea but the question is are my chances of getting in a lot stronger?? or am i in the same boat i was in 4 months ago"

I would suspect the same or less, frankly, because of the late date. But who knows? I wish you the best of luck though! Would you be happy in a psych program?

i think i will be. I'm in AP Psych and i find everything we learn interesting. Plus i am shooting for med school so it's good b/c it'll set me apart from the droves of students majoring in Biology. Then again, if the whole med thing doesn't work out i'm kind of screwed until i get my PH.D or at least masters but i am hoping if that happens i can switch into a genetics major....

I went on to the notification thingy for TCNJ and saw that they changed my major from bio to psych so at least i know they've looked at my app. sort of. I have ?? for u zoosermom. Why would they ask me to change my major and go through all that hassle if i'm on the same boat i was on little over 4 months ago? Wouldn't it be easier for them to reject me? I mean it's not like i know anyone at admissions. I'm not being defensive. I'm just trying to figure out some logic in this big mess!!

Maybe they were full before they even considered you for bio and you haven't been given a full review yet. I really don't know. Have you thought of writing a letter saying that you would be quite pleased to be a psych major?

Yea. After i received the e-mail posted i got another e-mail saying that both Chem and the Open Option Science program is full. So i sent them an e-mail saying that i'm aware of the situation and that i would be more than happy to switch my major to psych. I know that since then they've changed my major which tells me that the've at least looked at it. The guy i sent it to e-mailed me back saying thanx

I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you. Please let us know.
