TCNJ Junior Day 4/16/2012

I've been lurking here for a while and have found tons of valuable info, so I thought I'd make my first post a review, hoping it would help others.

My S is a Junior in a suburban NJ public high school (as were the majority of the hundreds of other students that were there with us), looking to major in Finance.
His first choice is NYU Stern, second Carnegie Melon, but he is not certain of acceptance to either, so he's also looking at Villanova, Fordham & TCNJ.

He didn't think he would like TCNJ(too small and too close to home - about 35min. drive), but he was very pleasantly surprised. Even though the day was at first just gloomy and then pouring rain, the campus still felt very warm and inviting. All the students we ran into (not just their student ambassadors) were very friendly and eager to answer questions.

The campus is small, which after seeing Rutgers New Brunswick, he liked. The cafeteria was just redone and seems to offer a ton of choices (deli, salad bar, pizza, etc.,).
The dorms are nothing special, but I imagine they are very typical freshman dorms (no air conditioning in the rooms is a bummer).

The best part of the day was getting an opportunity to speak with professors. The professor that was representing the Finance department was very informative and spent a nice amount of time answering my S questions.

All in all a good day (wish we had better weather though). We're visiting Carnegie Melon and Fordham next week, can't wait to see what my S thinks of them.

From a parents perspective, I think TCNJ is a great school for the price.

If anyone wants to ask any questions about the Junior day, I'll be happy to answer.

I’m a senior at a NJ high school and intent to attend TCNJ this year. Choosing the right college is not easy.
At first I though TCNJ was too small and old-fashioned for me, after visiting schools such as Drexel and NYU. After sitting in on a lecture and touring the science complex, I quickly changed my mind. I was so impressed with the school, the professors, the staff and the students.
There are a number of reference books you can get from the library by US News and World Report or the Princeton Review, which can give invaluable information about the better colleges in the country. These books have been a great tool in helping me make a decision.
TCNJ is far superior in the areas that I feel are important to a great education. The accessibility to professors, class size and cost along with the credentials of the professors are very impressive.
Best of luck in you search.

My Son is also a Junior at a HS in Central NJ and we had the opportunity to visit TCNJ last Fall. I asked him to go take a look when they had a Fall open house and he said he had “no interest” but would go to make me happy. He walked alway shocked at how much he liked it. He wants to be a Chemistry major and we were very impressed with the Science department and what we heard. He loved the size and look of the Campus. We ate lunch there and he was more then happy with the offerings in the cafeteria. The dorms were average, as you said.
We walked away thinking this was a great match for him but from what I am seeing here on these boards and at his school, they are very selective and hit and miss on who they admit.
My Son is in the top 14% of his HS, got good SAT scores, waiting for ACT scores and taking the SAT’s again in May and plenty of EC and honors but there are kids in his school that we thought for sure would get in and have been rejected or wait listed so although he will apply, I guess we will see. It is about an hour away from us so it would be ideal. What other schools is your Child interested in? We are in Syracuse now and touring this school and Binghamton tomorrow. In my opinion, these schools are too far for my liking but I promised him we would come look. It is also freezing here…lol…good luck!

My daughter just recently decided on TCNJ over Binghamton among others. At first she did not want to go until she researched and visited the school. In the end she surprised us and chose to attend. She was 1220 on SAT’s and she was top 15% of her class while taking the IB program which was offered at her HS. she also was a girl scout gold award recipient so i think your son has a good of a chance as any other. I understand that there were kids with over 1450 rejected by TCNJ so it must be a holistic admission process. Good luck.

Isn’t it funny how you have to talk the kid’s into visiting TCNJ and they end up loving it?

We visited Fordham today, beautiful campus, nice school rep, but just didn’t feel right to us.

We’re going to Pittsburgh tomorrow to see Pitt and CMU(this is a very far reach but he wants to see it), then on Thursday going to Philly. for a tour of the Fox business school at Temple(not really wild for him to go here, but a friend arranged an interview with the Dean of Admissions at the business school).

We will try to see Penn State, BU, GWU, Univ. of Delaware and Loyola at some point during the summer.
