Where was your merit scholarship listed on the portal?
Does anyone see a new button under Optional - TCNJ Change of Major Opportunity?
In the acceptance letter.
No, I don’t see anything in the portal labeled Optional. Where is that located?
It just showed up today. It is located by where the optional questions are located
Son applied for Computer science program and got this email a couple of hours ago. Figured it was a mass email to all applying for the program, but not sure, and not sure if changing major will indeed help that much…
Thank you for applying to The College of New Jersey. Your application for Computer Science has undergone an initial review by our counseling staff. The Computer Science department has received a significant number of applications this year, and admission to this program has become highly competitive. Therefore, we would like to offer you the opportunity to be considered for admission under a different program of study.
A select group of qualified applicants are being given this option, and we encourage you to take it seriously by investigating an alternate area of study that you find exciting, challenging, and that you will pursue with great passion while here at TCNJ.
If you believe that another academic program at TCNJ can be a great fit for you, then you should definitely submit the Change of major opportunity form. This form will provide the list of majors that are still available for Fall 2023 applicants.
Past history has shown that this can be a difficult decision for some of our applicants. Here are some important things to consider:
-
If you select a new program of study at this time, it should be with the expectation that you will engage fully in your new major and take coursework that is appropriate for that major.
-
Selecting a new program does not guarantee admission to TCNJ but rather provides you with the opportunity to have your application re-assessed under an available academic area.
-
If you change your major at this time, there is no guarantee that you will be allowed to change back into the Computer Science major after you enroll at TCNJ. However, we understand that many students are still determining their goals and ambitions as they complete their high school career, and we provide an internal change-of-major process for current students who discover new academic interests during their time on campus. This process can still be competitive depending on a student’s desired program of study and typically requires the completion of at least one full year of study.
If you prefer to remain under consideration in the Computer Science Program, you can let us know via the above form as well (it’s the default option for you when you open the form). Choosing this option (or choosing not to submit the form at all) means that we will continue to review your application under the Computer Science major and provide you with a final admissions decision by April 1st. There is a chance that your application may ultimately be placed on TCNJ’s Waiting List, in case a seat becomes available in the Computer Science program after our May 1st enrollment deadline.
While you may be feeling disappointed by this message, please know that our intention is to be honest about the very limited number of seats remaining in the Computer Science program and transparent in our effort to preserve the integrity of TCNJ’s educational mission: small classes; a high degree of faculty-student interaction; and a complete absence of teaching assistants. We trust you will make the decision that best suits your educational goals.
Sounds like they want to keep him as a student but not necessarily in his desired major. Looks like they are trying to play a chess game and admit as many as possible even if it is not in their desired majot.
I am also wondering if they are trying to find out if TCNJ is not in the running any longer. Many students already have heard from the majority of the schools they applied to and may have no intention of going to TCNJ. They may have applied to TCNJ as a safety and have already been admitted to their dream schools. They may be using this to make sure your son still wants to go to TCNJ and not wait the acceptance on him if it is no longer on his list.
Went through with the change of major form…figured if he starts undeclared he might be able to pursue the program later anyway. Couldn’t hurt to try but will keep this thread updated.
My son was accepted to Computer Engineering but there was nothing in his acceptance letter about merit scholarship / cost of attendance / financial aid.
Did everyone else who got accepted get this info in their acceptance letter? Trying to figure out if he should be contacting someone at the school to follow up.
Nothing about Merit in acceptance letter, yet.
My son was just accepted to Computer Science IS today. There was no mention of merit or COA.
My son got in too! No mention of merit here either
Accepted Finance!!!
My son also accepted tonight to the engineering school! No mention of merit aid so I’m thinking there is none. Still excited!
Daughter accepter for nursing! Out of state - no merit mentioned.
Son accepted yesterday, 3/3, Finance major. In state, 1440 SAT, 3.8 gpa, no merit but not surprised. Merit award will not take into account standardized test scores, as mentioned on their website.
“First-year in-state applicants to TCNJ are automatically considered for merit scholarships upon submission of their application. These awards are based on a student’s overall high school academic record (including the strength of curriculum, GPA, class rank, and strength of high school). As a test-optional institution, TCNJ will not consider standardized test scores as part of our merit scholarship review process.”
We were just excited for his acceptance. Good luck to everyone!
Thats good to know. I answered them, applied 12/31 and just heard back yesterday. Did received any merit information yet but happy to get the acceptance letter.
Congratulations! Fingers crossed for some merit $$ !
