hi pharmagal,
i was wondering if you can ask your son what his stats were. What were his scores? And how he did on teh interview? It would help a lot! Thanks! =D

did anyone else hear back from the program?

I’m still waiting to hear from Dr. Shevlin. But I’m starting to lose hope. I know of a few people who got acceptance calls on Saturday night. =(
congrats jjohn110…

also, i agree with desigirl…jjohn can you please post your stats? thanks…

My stats aren’t amazing compared to the norm on this site

SATs math 740 CR 740 writing 720 (2200)
Was ranked first in my class when I applied but my mid year report said I was second.

I’m in a bunch of clubs at school, but I’m not president or VP of any of them. (Nhs, red cross club, Fbla, stage crew, etc)

Medically related extracurriculars:
Certified EMT (I honestly believe this is what got me in)
100 hrs volunteering in hospital

That’s it lol

o rly?! wow…BUT U STILL GOT IN! which is rly great! im only a frosh…and i just want some advice jjohn110. thanks! plz gimme some xtra advice on how i should build my resume to get in to the program! like did u take SAT subject tests by any chance?

hi angelx3, can you post your stats plz? thank u!

thank you jjohn110…and congrats once again. i have similar sat scores, and good ECs but i’m now 90% sure I didnt get in, since i haven’t heard back yet. oh well…
btw desigirl23…you’re a freshman? enjoy high school, do your best, and worry about this stuff later. [although yeah, i do suggest you take subject tests…later :)]

sorry i didnt see your other post, desigirl… here are my stats.

Pres of NHS, on the mock trial team, and a bunch of other clubs.
Dance for twelve years.
Leader of a youth group.
Volunteer at hospital.
National Merit Commended, President’s Service Award, other random awards

yupp. thats pretty much it. hope that helps you.

wow dats rly good! thanks! yah i will…but i just want to know ahead of time…so i can start preparing from the beginning onwards.

o and jjohn110, what was ur gpa? both unweighted and weighted? o and angelx3, i suggest that u should probly give like a polite call to them or something, cause by seeing ur stats, i think that u should have a rly good chance to get in! just check on with the adcom! :D

I did take the SAT IIs, but again, my scores weren’t all that high lol

Biology M - 700
Math 1 - 680

And my weighted gpa was a 4.46 when i first applied and then a 4.48 in my midyear report. My school doesn’t do an unweighted gpa so I’m not sure what mine would be.

desigirl23, you should just try to show your interest in medicine. make sure you have a lot of volunteer hours in a hospital setting so they know you won’t be turned off by the reality of it, and maybe find a local emergency squad when you turn sixteen for some EMT experience. I don’t have any research experience or any time shadowing doctors so it goes to show that those are not necessities for these programs.

With my stats, I got into the tcnj/umdnj program, the psu 6 year program, and the drexel med program with drexel and lehigh undergrads.

Good luck with high school and please don’t worry too much about this. My freshman and sophomore years I had no idea about these sites or these programs, and obviously i did fine lol. Just try to enjoy your earlier years of high school :)

lol thanks desigirl, but i got rejected. =(

To everyone that got in, congrats. It was definitely the toughest year in terms of admissions according to Dr. Shevlin, so if you didn’t make the cut, keep your head up and make the most of wherever you decide to go. For those that did get in, you should be getting a letter/email about an SMED accepted students day and overnight stay. You should make every effort to attend as you will get a feel for the students, the classes, campus, food and be able to ask any questions you may have about TCNJ. When I got the acceptance, I was almost sure I wanted to come here, but after visiting and talking to the SMEDs, I definitely saw myself as a fitting in as a student here.

thanks jjohn110 for posting ur stats… and congrats once again! and sry angelx3, but i know that wherever u go to college, ull do great! keep up the great work!

Gosh, Desigirl. I don’t remember his exact stats…but I recall he nearly aced SATIIs (Chem 790, Bio 800, and Calc ~790) and in SAT had about 2190. He went to HS at a very prestigious Science Academy and was in top 1% of the class.

ECs -
Hospital volunteering ~200 hrs, doctor shadowing an Oncologist for a year (every Wed/all day in Sr year - through his school’s program), Research in inflammation that he presented at a NJ science fair and got honorable mention, EMT certificate, and rode the town’s ambulence every Friday. Some volunteering at a disabled children’s summer camp in freshman year.
That’s pretty much it.

Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

what specifically do you think i should do over this freshman year summer that can add to my resume so i can get into this program? This summer im PREPPINg alot for SAT Prep and in school next year. Next year, I am taking all Honors courses with One AP course. This summer, im planning to volunteer at a hospital, senior nursing home (accumulated 50+ hrs so far), and I will be tutoring young children. I’m looking up research programs for online, too. Right now, my GPA is a 4.415789, so like 94-5% weighted with honors course load, and unweighted is obviously 4.0. I’m gonna keep that up. What do you think i should do now to increase my chances of acceptance?

Is it true that all TCNJ SMED students would get full ride? Or they only give need-based scholarship?

It’s really strange. I was told by a reliable source that TCNJ SMED students get a full ride, but in my acceptance letter, I was only given $26800. Anyone in the same situation as I am?

desigirl23,

Be careful not to burn yourself out (you’ll be doing that in med school) Don’t study 24/7 and enjoy high school plz Volunteering at a hospital and senior nursing home is plenty enough for one summer. Maybe try to find some research to do the following summer or become an EMT. Even if it does look great, just remember that research is not required for the med program, although I’m sure you’ll find something in the next 3 years. The majority people I know didn’t do any research during high school.

TCNJ is poor now, I heard they haven’t given full rides in the past 4 years.
